Thanks for the short newsletter! It's about all I can handle today. I wanted to highlight three school board races that Markers For Democracy is writing for this weekend. The elections are on Tuesday, May 21 so postcards need to be mailed on Tuesday, May 14th. Hope that some of you can help us get these cards done! One race is in Georgia and two are in New York. The one I am most familiar with is for the Clarkstown Central School District in Rockland County, New York, a suburb of NYC. There is a slate of experienced educators for whom we are writing postcards. They are up against a slate of candidates using Moms for Liberty rhetoric like "parental rights" and who are being supported by the local GOP. The GOP supported candidates are taking issue with gender neutral bathrooms and other LGBTQ-supportive policies. You can read about the background here. https://www.lohud.com/story/news/education/2024/02/09/transgender-school-policy-draws-cheers-jeers-in-clarkstown-new-york/72520358007/ You can read about the three school board races and other postcarding opportunities here. https://mailchi.mp/286dd869cea3/this-week-in-postcarding-510-issue?e=661948f71c We are having extended Zoom postcarding hours today, Monday, and Tuesday. All are welcome. Thanks! Have a good weekend!

Thank you for all that you do Jessica. If they handed out rings for people who helped win the election and saved Democracy like Super Bowl Teams, you would get one! Quick question, how do I get in touch with you? I have sensitive information that I would like to share with you that could move the needle with Independents.

Please consider talking up Gloria Johnson running for Senate in TN: she came up to Louisville to talk to us: her plan is to go to all the state districts in TN to talk about the issues ---to anyone who will listen---

Here's the tale of Trump's plummetting popularity in Republican primaries. You might want to put this data in your next "good news" list

On March 12, Haley won 13.2% of the vote in Georgia (or 78,000 votes)...............................

On March 19 she won 17.8% of the vote in Arizona (111,000 votes), 3.9% of the vote in Florida (155,000 votes), and 14.4% of the vote in Ohio (161,000 votes)............................

.On April 2 she won 12.8% of the votes in Wisconsin (77,000 votes).................................

On April 23, Haley won 16.6% of the votes in Pennsylvania (158,000 votes)....................

This week Haley won 21.7% of the vote in Indiana having dropped out of the race 6 weeks earlier (128,000 votes)........................

And Trump probably didn't pickup any voters based on Story Daniels' testimony.

And when did she drop out?

Welcome to Washington. As one who lives here (in the VA burbs), there are real people (as opposed to politicians) that live and work here.

For anyone who is following the races in NC, I thought I would share this interesting (and encouraging) substack post from Thomas Mills of Politics NC:

https://open.substack.com/pub/politicsnc/p/republican-superintendent-of-public?r=1aiy5t&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

"Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt appears to have endorsed Democratic nominee Mo Green to succeed her. Truitt lost her primary to MAGA Michele Morrow, a conspiracy theorist with a history of calling for the execution of people with whom she disagrees. Morrow has no experience working in public education.

According the News & Observer, both Green and Truitt showed up at a breakfast sponsored by the Public School Forum of North Carolina, a nonprofit organization that calls itself a “champion of better public schools.” In her remarks, Truitt said, “I hope we can rally behind education leaders who take time to show up and share their vision independent of buzzwords.” Morrow skipped the forum.

Truitt is clearly targeting Morrow with her remarks. Morrow, like Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, has claimed that public schools are “socialist indoctrination centers” and focused heavily on CRT. Morrow never sent her children to public schools and has not met with public school officials, choosing instead to criticize them.

Hooray from central NC. Another current symbol of Trump's crumbling propaganda effect. "You can fool some people all the time; some of the people, some of the time, but not all of us all the time.". Likely not many from now until November, again. Love, Doc Though I do worry bout the Trumpers who would still sell a cow to Trump on a handshake.

Robinson is a nutcase!

Ad for "Gulf Coast Cattleman": Would you sell a good bull to Trump on credit? or? "Would you sell a good bull to Trump on a handshake?" Which phrasing does Jessie at al think would be more effective? Obviously a cattle family audience. Most sales rancher to rancher are cash or good check. Could be more dramatic about driving off with the bull in your trailer!!

I think so. Arrived here as a would be Federal Gov't employee in 1975 after leaving California 10 years before (living in the midwest and Florida in the interim). Am now retired, but I have yet to see a good reason to move out of the area.

Jess, do you know why Mark Kelly is not a supporter of the Assault Weapons Ban? I have asked his office three times and gotten no answer. It is just to satisfy gun owners in Arizona who will vote for him? Or is there something seriously wrong with the bill?

Hahah this is funny. Because yesterday when he was speaking to us I leaned over and said to the person next to me: "all I want to do is raise my hand and ask him why he's not co-sponsoring the assault weapons ban act." And she was like "really? he's not? Even with Gabby Giffords as his wife?" And I said "YUP." People are always really surprised. But then later that afternoon I was talking to Olivia Julianna (young activist and content creator out of TX) and I mentioned it to her. She said, "being from a purple state I can tell you that he's doing what he needs to do to survive politically. Give him time. As the state goes more blue so will he--especially considering he just came out in support of filibuster reform." I think she's likely right.

On a related note, I happened to meet two Senate staffers in the Capitol just now--I was trying to find my way out of the building to catch an Uber and they very kindly offered to walk me up. They mentioned they worked for Senators and I asked who. One said they worked for Chris Murphy, and the other one said they worked for Angus King. I saw my opportunity right away and said "That's awesome! Would you please ask Senator King to co-sponsor the Assault Weapons Ban Act?" Murphy's aid cheered (Murphy is great on guns, of course) and King's staffer told me all about how he's co-sponsoring the Go SAFE Act, but then I told her that that bill didn't cover the right kinds of assault weapons and they were both like, "oh wow you really know what you're talking about!" I said "I've been a Moms Demand Action volunteer for a really long time and this is really important to me." She said "I will pass it along! We all know something needs to be done." It was very friendly and very cordial and we all shook hands and they gave me their contact info and it was awesome. I figure ANY chance we get we need to lobby our lawmakers! Especially on the AWB!
