Your spirit is so grounded as you are talking to the viewers. It's really meaningful to hear from someone who was there and can share what truthfully was happening. Thank you for all that you do here on substack!

Glad you introduced us to the Congresswoman. She was great!

How so? She told constituents to go out and get harmed and arrested??? She told constituents to phone their reps so she can know what's going on? She doesnt the heck KNOW what's going ON? This whole interview was her selling us out, and making us feel it's our fault.

The Congresswoman gave us an inspiring peptalk, clarifying that saving democracy and the rule of law depends on each one of us. It’s called empowerment. She is grounded in the reality that this is not going to be an easy task, but that we have done it before, and we can and must do it again. The fight may get messy, because democracy is inherently complex, confusing, and subject to misinformation and foul play. She did not say the current state of affairs is our fault; she did say that it’s up to us to change it. She gave us a call to action: not to get hurt but to get involved, fully aware that resisting is difficult, but also knowing that our own self-confidence and unity among ourselves are our greatest assets.

She snowed you. It is literally her job, to do those things -- but then what things are you referring to exactly -- because she said nothing other than to re-elect her to another (so far) meaningless term.

Oh, no, as I'd said: she said to call your reps. Whoa, shocking, such deeply thoughtful advice -- because "otherwise those reps dont know what is going on and cant take a moral stand, because oh, they are sooooo confused about what the fed govt is doing, is it right, is it wrong, they cant decide"-- you want to believe that crap?? I'm hoping you will see through that BS so we can not wind up here for the rest of our lives and maybe not even able to survive this, get it? Try actually thinking about what I'm saying.

Greetings from Tucson, Arizona! 🌵 My heart is with you all. I’m old enough (but not by much) to remember a little bit of Dr. King’s lessons on the “passive resistance” form of peaceful protests. I think DT is hoping things escalate, and traditional media aren’t helping. We need to not let that happen! Would passive resistance be advisable?

Yes. Without our peaceful resistance - we would already be in a far worse position. Along with distracting from the budget & pushing an escalating narrative of violence to justify ICE/ domestic military intrusion; this action is likely aimed at intimidating from the expected national 'No Kings' protest rallies on the 14th. We need huge numbers across the nation on the 14th - please help get the news out!

Tesla Takedown protests have been very effective. Boycotting X for promoting extremism would be a helpful message to add to the Takedown protests & encouraging Blues Sky as an alternative.

Calling legislators is extremely important! MAGA is not numerous - but very Loud!

Legal action has been helpful so far as well - but that will likely only last while we show growing strength in resistance.

Protest, boycott, call representatives, organize in neighborhoods & communities...

Help spread factual & progressive news & information (like, share, subscribe, comment, to boost algorithms) share in social circles & organizations. So much of the issue is simply education of citizens on the Truth of what is going on. The lies & propaganda continue to drown the truth for many people.

THANK YOU!!! I was beginning to think my 117 day call spree to my 3 state representatives who do feel the same way, and now to 15 Republican Senators was a waste of time! It gives me the energy to keep going. To those who are writing and calling, too, THANKS!!!

AND if you haven't started, the 5 calls app for your phone makes it easier to do because it describes the issues, gives you a script, and keeps the phone numbers where you can use them easily!!

Absolutely! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are doing such essential work!

General note

MAGA is few, but Loud. We need to be louder, by far, to push republican reps into the uncomfortable territory of representing citizens (defying Trump in spite of threats).

Conveying the dire state of our democracy, and urgency of quickly correcting course is essential for democratic reps as well. All democrat & independent reps need to remain unified & get more effective at resisting!

The muscle behind the message is millions of protesters in Hands Off protests, & on June 14th No Kings rallies (as well as tens of thousands at Sanders & Cortez rallies). The number of people in the streets for the nationwide protests needs to grow! Please, everyone, help spread the word if you have some network or other way to do so.

I’m seeing your replies here Janet and seems to me you’re acting like a provocateur. I’m wondering why.

Also you are extremely negative. Why don’t you offer an action we can do, that you are doing or that you would like to do?

janet's avatar

Here's an action: let's call this congresswoman's office and tell her she has been useless particularly in her interview on this substack. What do you say? Or where you just trying to provoke me...

janet's avatar

"negative"??? meaning, what, that we shouldnt say things are bad? If i criticized the president, would you think that was still being a provocateur?

as to your next comment, my point, if you are able to read, is that she came on here and said nothing she is doing. You are able to read, no? Or do you just want to harass me?

I know that it’s frustrating that a lot of what congresspeople do isn’t flashy, but that doesn’t mean they’re doing nothing. You can not like it, but Democrats in congress aren’t going to stop Trump on their own and a lot of their efforts these days are trying to raise awareness to create the backlash to stop what’s happening. My congressman, who represents Camp Pendleton is trying to stop DOD from deploying the military to LA. He is communicating with Hegseth but he’s also talking to vets and posting videos on why deploying the military domestically is dangerous. It’s not as interesting as standing in front of a tank, but it is doing the work.

Dont try to take the heat off her, by changing the subject. IF they are going to speak publicly, they should be saying what exactly they are doing. This congresswoman said NOthing, which is the point of this conversation.

To your larger point, Democrat senators, for example, are voting for the administrations nominees -- MANY Dem senators, and MANY nominees.

Expand full comment
Michelle's avatar

I'm sorry, but you and I having a Substack conversation about her is not adding or taking away heat. I am simply suggesting that her comments in the conversation with Jess may not be the totality of what she is doing. Maybe she sucks, maybe she doesn't.

I also don't like when senators vote for Trump's nominees and when it's one of mine, I complain to them. But, Alex Padilla, who recently voted for that dumb crypto bill, has been very good in other ways, including going to Guantanamo to find out what was going on with the detainees there. It's a mixed bag and I try to acknowledge that.

I replayed it, to see what you meant. She said she was in CA to vote. Then she said she went to "five events." I don't know what meant, but she did not clarify at all that she was in any kind of protest.

She wasn’t in California to vote. She was in her home district this weekend and flew back to Washington DC this morning, did five events and voted.

Thanks, Jess, for sharing your experience in downtown L.A. The same thing happened in Portland during the BLM protests a few years ago. The Feds came in, uninvited by either the mayor or the governor, and caused irritation. The same loop of the few bad actors and the damage they caused was presented by the media as a city wide meltdown. I was there during most of the protests and we were thousands of peaceful protesters ... but that image didn't garner the emotional hit for the rage machine. We are standing strong for Los Angeles and will be out on Saturday for No King's Day.

I hale from San Antonio and am thrilled to learn of the Democratic mayoral win!! Also, loved the interview with Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove. I look forward to hearing from her again!

I watch you from Maine. I had a hard time sleeping last night…I lived in DC , right on Capitol Hill during trump 1 ( helping care from my grandbabies) during the George Floyd protests, also peaceful, until interfered with. . When I awoke today, I was feeling panicky ( I have seen footage of what happened in LA). While watching your interview with the congresswoman, I became calm, grounded and ready. On Friday I will be 75. I am fit and active, participating yet again in resistance. Thank you for your courage, strength, and ability to model for us , to set a tone. My city is a Sanctuary, mostly people from Africa, but really everywhere : Christians, Muslims . English Language learners fill and enrich our schools. Than you Jess.
