Today the NYC Gay+ Pride Parade started off with local political leaders Governor Kathy Hochul, AG Tish James, Mayor Eric Adams, US Senator Charles Schumer, and many others. It was a long, long parade with approximately 4 zillion people marching and watching, many of whom carried signs supporting trans kids.
"The chemical and manufacturing giant 3M reached a $10.3 billion settlement on Thursday with U.S. cities and towns over their claims that the company contaminated drinking water with so-called forever chemicals used in everything from firefighting foam to nonstick coatings." This bit of good news raises the question - Where does the money go? Is it used for remediation or does it just go to the municipal general fund leaving thewater just as polluted as it is now? Is there a 'cease and desist' agreement that prevents 3M from continuing the dumping or do they just move along with business as usual? The settlement amount is roughly 70% of 3M's 2022 reported profit which will hurt if they have to pay it out all at once but those are the sorts of details that we don't hear.
That's this week's project, we have some very warm weather coming in this week so the dog and I will have a lot of indoor time. I'd been thinking about this from time to time when I see stories of big fines but, other than the tobacco settlement, not many follow-up details every become public.

Good questions. I think the money is for cleanup. I'm sure there's more info out there if you search it.
