Thank you Jess, the Extra Extra! Is the highlight of my week!

Here’s another one! (copy/paste from NOAA Coral Reef Conservation FB Page)

The Marshall Islands created their first marine sanctuary! It will:

🪸 Protect 48,000 square km of biodiverse habitats, including coral reefs

🐠 Support vulnerable fish species

🐢 Shelter the nation’s largest green turtle nesting colony, and deep-sea sharks

Learn more: https://icriforum.org/marshall-islands-creates-first-marine-sanctuary/

This is special to me because my uncle spent decades teaching in the MI, studying coral death and advocating for conservation. He would have been thrilled to see this.

It's special to me too, because I recently learned that my father helped test nukes on Bikini & Enewetak Atolls in the 1950s, and he lived to understand the consequences.

Susan, that’s lovely and so bittersweet. I have complicated thoughts on the existence of an afterlife, but I’d like think that somewhere my uncle and your dad know that something good has happened in that place.

As always, Jess, it is wonderful that you compiled this list for us. By the end of each week, I feel like we are being pushed back by the tide, but then I read this, and realize that it is not so!

With the anticipated thousands [million+?]] of heroic protestors on April 5th here's an updated partial list of those fighting back every day [as of 3-23-25). I'm also adding courageous law firms who haven't caved. Besides upstanding lawyers, and law-abiding honorable (present and former) judges (including James Boasberg, chief judge, D.C. District Ct.), here's a growing list of Profiles in Courage men, women, and advocacy groups who refuse to be cowed or kneel to the force of Trump/Musk/MAGA/Fox "News" intimidation:

I'll begin (again) with Missouri's own indomitable Jess[ica] (à la John Lewis's "get in good trouble") Piper, then, in no particular order, Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce Vance, Bernie Sanders, AOC, Gov. Tim walz, Sarah Inama, Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Jasmine Crockett, Ruth Ben-Ghait, Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O'Donnell, Chris Hayes, Stephanie Miller, Gov. Janet Mills, Gov. Beshear, Jim Acosta, Jen Rubin And the Contrarians, Dan Rather, Robert Reich, Steve Brodner, Brian TylerCohen, Jessica Craven, Scott Dworkin, Annne Applebaum, Lucian Truscott IV, Chris Murphy, Jeff Merkley, Elizabeth Warren, Tim Snyder, Robert B. Hubbell, Ben Meiseilas, Rich wilson, Ron Filpkowski, Jeremy Seahill,Thom Hartmann, Jonathan Bernstein, Simon Rosenberg, Marianne Williamson, Mark Fiore, Jamie Raskin, Rebecca Solnit, Steve Schmidt, Josh Marshall, Paul Krugman, Andy Borowitz, Jeff Danziger, Ann Telnaes,͏ ͏Will Bunch, Jim Hightower, Dan Pfeifer, Dean Obeidallah--

American Bar Association, Indivisible. MoveOn, DemCast, Blue Missouri, Third Act, Democracy Forward, Public Citizen, Democracy Index, Marc Elias/Democracy Docket, Public Citizen, Lambda Legal, CREW, CODEPINK, ACLU et al. And, as Joyce Vance says, "We're in this together"--or via Jess Piper, from rural Missouri: "Solidarity." FIGHT BACK! WE ARE NOT ALONE! (Latest addition h/t , Robert B. Hubbell: Law firms, see below)

* Perkins Coie and Covington & Burling have resisted Trump, fighting back with the help of other courageous firms like Williams & Connolly. Per The ABA Journal,

Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, representing fired inspectors general. (Law.com)

Hogan Lovells, seeking to block executive orders to end federal funding for gender-affirming medical care. (Law.com)

Jenner & Block, also seeking to block the orders on cuts to medical research funding. (Law.com, Reuters)

Ropes & Gray, also seeking to block cuts to medical research funding. (Law.com)

Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, representing the Amica Center for Immigrants Rights and others seeking to block funding cuts for immigrant legal services. (Law.com)

Republican Congressman Andy Barr of Lexington, Kentucky scheduled a town hall in his district. When over 900 angry constituents showed up, Barr was apparently afraid to face them - he sent out a staffer to claim a last-minute conflict. The staffer also relayed that to fulfill Barr's commitment to complete transparency, he would be interviewed on TV. The folks present were having none of it. They proceeded to share the microphone and voice their opinions for at least an hour.

Hi Jessica, the daughter of a friend posted this on Facebook. I’m wondering if you can add it to one of your actions? I know it’s not good news for today, and I apologize if you’ve already posted it, but it seems particularly important for all of us to call our reps about:

“One of the greatest honors of my life has been sitting next to kids in court. Speaking up for a traumatized kid and helping them feel less alone during a scary court process has always felt like the right thing to do.

When I did this in immigration court, my clients were kids from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador who were not safe at home. They couldn't go to school without a gang threatening to kill them if they didn't join. They lived with an abusive, alcoholic parent, and didn't have another grown up in their home country to take care of them. They came to the U.S. to be with parents, aunts, uncles, or older siblings.

Regardless of their reasons for coming, every kid had to fight a deportation case. This was true even of the 18-month old girl I represented. Her biological mother, a 15 year old girl who was raped by her own father, had given my client up for adoption at birth. My client was separated from her adoptive mother at the border and placed in immigration detention. ICE still wanted to deport her, and without legal representation from me, they would have succeeded.

The federal program that funds lawyers for a small portion of kids in immigration court - the one that funded my work in Texas - was terminated today.

If you are moved out of your care for me, concern for these kids, or fairness in our country, here's what you can do: call 202-224-3121 or email your rep at this link: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/restore-legal-services-for-unaccompanied-children/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAabf1Eog9B5m2ylkwVBZT9Q75e0M1xp24m1OOcTK81r6LFlUb-KTMtta1-s_aem_pCX_YcDY6xiqNeXmIZxt2Q

Suggested Script: “Hello, I’m calling to urge [official name] to take action to defend the Unaccompanied Children Program which was recently decimated by the Trump administration. This program provides legal services and direct representation to some of the most vulnerable children. Nationwide 26,000 unaccompanied children receive direct legal representation, as well as legal orientations. Over 100,000 children annually benefit from other services under the contract. The program’s funding is appropriated by Congress, and it has enjoyed bipartisan support since 2003. Legal aid is more critical than ever due to ICE enforcement. It is virtually impossible for a child to understand their legal options or successfully navigate complex legal proceedings alone, without a specialized children’s rights attorney, particularly if they are in detention. Immigration judges were almost 100 times less likely to grant relief to unaccompanied children without counsel than those with counsel. Many of the children served by this program have already experienced severe trauma and violence and they are at risk of further harm or exploitation. I urge you to support the Unaccompanied Children Program and speak out against any efforts to end legal representation for unaccompanied children.”

DFL....???

The Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) is a political party in the U.S. state of Minnesota affiliated with the national Democratic Party.[5][6] The party was formed by a merger between the Minnesota Democratic Party and the Minnesota Farmer–Labor Party in 1944.[7] The DFL is one of two state Democratic Party affiliates with a different name from that of the national party, the other being the neighboring North Dakota Democratic–Nonpartisan League Party.[5]

The DFL controls four of Minnesota's eight U.S. House seats, both of its U.S. Senate seats, the Minnesota Senate, and all other statewide offices, including the governorship, making it the dominant party in the state. Its main political rival is the Republican Party of Minnesota.

Also, in the Good News dept.: Bernie Sanders refused to remain in an ABC interview today when the reporter insisted on nonsense questions; he got up and walked out. It's time all Democrats did likewise when they face malpractice journalism. 83, and still sharp as a tack!
