Hi, all. I hate to write you twice in one day but I felt it was important to correct something I wrote in this morning’s email. Thanks so much to the reader who flagged it for me. In today’s Chop Wood, Carry Water I wrote: Did you know that during the Bush administration the NRA actually had an office in the West Wing? This has apparently been the case during several Republican administrations. Shocking, right?
Please don’t beat yourself up, Jessica. The important thing is you sent a correction as soon as you found out. And we all know that (unlike certain others) you do not spread untruths intentionally.
Writing for public consumption is never easy. We are human and make mistakes. I have far more respect for someone who admits and works to correct them than for someone who wants to pretend that they never happened.
I am quite happy with great; I don’t need perfection. The most we humans can do is acknowledge a mistake when we make one (which of course is often), correct it if we can, and express our genuine regret. You have beautifully demonstrated all of this. So thank you for that.
I admire your diligence and adherence to facts and data. When I was at Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles that was how we made decisions and our job was to convey those faithfully to our customers. Thus I am glad to see it in you.
You are human, Jess, and we make mistakes. Considering all you process every day and do for us and the country, it’s amazing you don’t make more mistakes.
what everyone else has said here. please don't beat yourself up about this error, as you're only human, after all. much love and gratitude to you for all you do for the sake of saving our democracy.
Taking a wider view (and yes, Jess, don't be too hard on yourself; you did the right thing, and you learned):
So many young people these days -- being rightfully afraid of being gunned down -- DO, so to speak, have an NRA office in some wing of their minds. This death- and injury-dealing organization, by contributing to fear of gun violence, does occupy too much of everyone's feelings and thoughts.
Real progress is underway, and reason for hope and more action...
Journalistic integrity. It beats perfect, every time. Kudos for your updates!
Thanks, Paula!

Ha. No, I don't. Thank you for understanding!

Thank you, Elisanne!

Thank you, William. I fear I demonstrate it a bit too often, but c'est la vie!

Thank you, Alan. And back at you, of course.

Thanks, Mim. Appreciate that.
Thanks for your column and the occasional prompt corrections. Now if we can just get the GOP to start correcting themselves, at any time!
Ha! Wouldn't that be lovely?
And this is why your readers follow you. What a novel idea…correcting a mistake!
Yes to all. And don’t worry. We never mind hearing from you. Twice in a day is fine if needed. Always happy to see your name in my inbox!
Thanks, Jenny!
Jessica, we all make mistakes; I've written my share of corrections, too! In my book, you're the best there is and this correction only proves it!
Thank you, Mariann!

My new line…”Be like Jess!” I have a VERY literal-minded brain so I can relate. You rock !!💙
Thanks, Kathy!

Hey, you do so much good work that it's easy to forgive you. GOD BLESS!
It's proof of something we all knew - you're human! Mistakes are a great teacher. Thanks for sharing your lesson!
