Hi, all, and happy Friday! Yesterday was a big day. Trump arraigned in Georgia, finally! I didn’t post his mugshot here, as you’ve surely seen it a hundred times by now, but what a satisfying sight! It was a glorious visual reminder that no one—no one!—is above the law. We can’t celebrate that enough.
After yesterday's wall to wall coverage of TFG's impending surrender for booking that ultimately resulted in the scowling mug shot, and which he quickly turned into a merchandizing meme, I wondered, "What did President Biden and Vice President Harris do today?" I honestly didn't know, so I looked online and found nothing of note. Even in multiple indictments, TFG is getting all of the attention and sucking all of the oxygen out of the atmosphere.
We need to keep talking up the significant accomplishments of the Biden Administration, and spread the word. The administration needs to find a way to do so also. To that end, I mailed a letter to President Biden today, suggesting a daily briefing, perhaps in the form of an email that people could subscribe to. Today I did find the White House Briefing Room, [ https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/ ], which has a lot of good, positive info, but an emailed synopsis would be helpful.
I've actually wished for awhile that he would do a weekly fireside chat and just let people know what he's been up to. I think people would really respond well to it. I like the email idea but so many people don't use email anymore--especially young folks.
I actually suggested the same thing a while back. I agree that it would probably be a good medium for him. You're right about email - I guess I'm showing my age. Maybe other platforms as well.
He was on vacation, but obviously the Russian issue creeped in. They do a lot on Instagram, POTUS, VPOTUS, and White House—as well and Joe and Kamala’s pages, if you are on IG definitely give them all a follow!
Our local landfill has built a methane powered power plant which creates electricity which is then sold to a nearby community. They have all sorts of special pipes bringing the methane from the disposal area into the plant. Every landfill should do that!
Methane is a gas. Highly volatile, but a gas. They are able to use it to create electricity. I believe that when burned, there is no toxicity in the fumes, but I'm not a chemist....so don't remember what they said on the tour of the power plant.
Many people, such as those who live in apartment complexes, mobile home parks or retirement homes, do not have the space to compost, or management is against it, as it can draw rats and mice, etc. to the area. A much better solution, that may unfortunately take some doing to get their agreement, is to get your local refuse company to process the food scraps separate from your other non-recyclable garbage. We have green bins for our garden waste and are now allowed to put any and all food waste into these bins, along with any paper or cardboard take out containers such as pizza boxes, that would not be allowed in the Recycle bin because they are not clean enough. Our green bin contents are delivered to a place that grinds it all up and composts it in huge piles until it is broken down into usable compost for local ranches or to be used for bedding at local dairy ranches. It took some doing to make this happen, working with our county government and local refuse companies, but it is worth it to not have those food scraps brewing methane for years.
I am in Marin County, north of San Francisco. And I believe you are in Southern California.
See California state law SB1383: "Beginning in 2022, SB 1383 requires every jurisdiction to provide organic waste collection services to all residents and businesses.
“Jurisdiction” means a city, county, a city and county, or a special district that provides solid waste collection services.
“Organic waste” includes food, green material, landscape and pruning waste, organic textiles and carpets, lumber, wood, paper products, printing and writing paper, manure, biosolids, digestate, and sludges."
If you are in California and not getting this service from your local collection service, call them and find out why not.
I saw this today on a comment to Hubbell’s substack. Great stuff here with great visuals to share on social media. All of Biden’s accomplishments. There are a lot of them.
Btw. I shared the climate action now app. Hoping for more shares.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, for endorsing Aaron Regunberg and pushing for support Phoebe and I are from Rhode Island and long time supporters of David Ciicilline. Aaron is by far the best candidate in the primary. He's very bright and like David will be an excellent legislator..
I have now been a subscriber to Chop Wood, Carry Water for several weeks. Is there any reason why writing an email is any less effective than calling and leaving a message? When I do the latter, I always get a (form) response from legislators, but the same is true when I call and leave a message.
Welcome, Frank, and I always do both, a phone call and an email. They don't keep track of the names of people who contact them, so why not contact your representatives both ways and double your influence.
All the link to the 80 environmental groups' letter is here. https://earthjustice.org/wp-content/uploads/sequoias_opposition_letter_6-21-22.pdf
Sorry about the broken link!
Thanks for including the Momnibus bill action Jess. I appreciate it...Alan
And I appreciate you!
Borrowing from Hubbell, new idea for mug shot caption:

Love it.

What do you think?

I'm not active on IG, but I'll take a look. I guess what I'm suggesting is something delivered, to counter the "news;" a push rather than a pull.
Yeah, I agree…it’s a good idea for sure!
Our local landfill has built a methane powered power plant which creates electricity which is then sold to a nearby community. They have all sorts of special pipes bringing the methane from the disposal area into the plant. Every landfill should do that!
Interesting! But does the methane, once used, have bad by-products? I'd love to hear more about it!

That is fantastic! Where are you located?

Oh yes no we are. Just wanted to know where else was doing it. Good old CA. (:

Oh yay! I hope he wins! I’ll be calling for him Thursday!

Frank, first of all welcome! Second, I address that question here in my FAQ doc. It really doesn't make a huge difference as long as they can tell you're a real person writing in. It's the form letters that don't much move them. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Yug2slxUsuKNduC7uLF4u4VbOrh56CbPg_rzzNhTpfA/edit

Just donated to Aaron.
OOH thank you!
