It was just a matter of time that 'someone' was going to latch on to Gus' neurodiversity and try to make hay out of his stardust. Seeing Gus up there the other night made me think even more of Tim Walz . His emotional authenticity attests to the super power he brings to this race and the values he brings to being a dad.

Gus said , "That's my Dad!" I said, That's my Vice President!"

It was very touching. To see a young man so happy and proud of his dad is something special.

And I felt it might be an excellent example for our culture to see, as men, and even boys and teenagers, are so strongly discouraged from showing that level of emotion, not to mention the tears, unless it is for a sporting event or anything resembling "combat", as in wrestling matches, martial arts, video games, etc.

Thank you Jessica for contacting the station about the unprofessional conduct their reporter has.

Just so awful. Ann Coulter needs to be ignored.

Expand full comment

This isn't Ann Coulter. It's a talk show host. but she's awful, too.

Expand full comment

Ann had a similar despicable comment that she retracted under pressure.

Expand full comment

Must be miserable to be her.

Expand full comment

I've never paid attention to Ann Coulter so I missed this. I'm glad I did.

I wish she could be more than ignored...oh dear, my not-nice-was-called-fat-ass-in-high-school-by-the-captain-of-the-football-team self just showed up!!

I understand she had to take the post down because of all the clack she received.

Ann who?

Jess, you are so inspiring that I just ordered another 100 postcards to write, this time from Blue Wave. I've already written 600 with Field Team 6 and Postcards to Swing States, and I've got 100 coming from Moms Rising. Thank you for everything you do!!

Wow! Amazing and thank you so much!

Expand full comment

Wow, that's great! I'm writing too; slightly fewer numbers (!) but if we all do what we can, it's going to work!!

How's Miss Kitty?

Expand full comment

She's good and thanks you for asking! She rubs my legs more often now, and still swats me when she's ready to stop - but no more claws. Also, no cuddling yet, but she does sometimes come up on the hassock that's next to my recliner where I sleep. One morning I woke up to her little face looking right at me!

I think I'm copying you, Paula. I, too, just finished with FT6 GOTV to GA and FL. Now working on Blue Wave going to Nebraska!

Jess, I've been a little distracted; getting ready to go to Hollywood next weekend as a finalist in the One Dem Minute film festival, Sept 1, the day before my 79th birthday! I never would have known of the festival w/o CWCW, so thank you again! They've asked us not to share the films on social media until after the festival, but I'll be blowing our horn a bit after that! Thanks for all you do!

You're a star!

Awwwwww! thanks Jess!

Expand full comment

Hey Terry, let us know when it goes public and if we get to vote on the winners (a la People's Choice awards).

Expand full comment

Cheryl that is so sweet! Thank you! They told us to hold off until after the festival so I will send out the link on Sept 2. Also, all of the finalist videos will be distributed by One Dem Minute as they are designed to help "squishy Dems, undecideds, and independents vote Democrat. So in that case I already feel like a winner! The awards are on top of that and are decided by a panel of judges who are professionals in the field. So while an award would be nice, I'm quite happy being a finalist. There were over 300 entries, and yes, I'm bragging a bit!

I don’t think I’m alone that another effect of the DNC was the reclamation of patriotism, waving the American flag, and being proud to be an American, phrases used mostly by Republicans until now. We’ve been trying to reclaim patriotism intellectually these past few years, but last night’s DNC really brought it home to the heart and normalized it for the Democratic Party.

100% agree!

For the first time since 2016 I felt really good about patriotism and our flag. Such a sad waste of 8 years.....

I have already given generously to the Movement Voter Project. So today, because of the match, I gave to the States Project. We have all learned how important state legislatures are. Glad for the work the States Project does. Thanks, Jessica, for posting the link.

Last night was the first time I got to see the convention live. I turned up the volume, laughed, danced cried, and wrote as many postcards as I could between times. To see so many happy, energized folks celebrating America and democracy together was beyond uplifting. All those thorny issues will be with us every day of the year, but for four days, the American people who love our country and despise MAGA and all the hate, bile, and violence it stands for, had a chance to be together and throw their hats in the air. It was wonderful. Onward.

I agree. So upliftng!

Beautiful description of what it felt like.

I can't believe a radio show host would make a comment like that (about Gus Walz), and not get fired.

Absolutely abhorrent and revolting, and the so-called "apology" did little to dig him out of a hole.

Why hasn't the station publicly taken any action against this vile man?

Expand full comment

I saw on Twitter that he was removed - but it didn't say if it was permanent. Apparently they got thousands of protests and he was "removed" but I don't know if it was permanent. The tweet was deleted as was Ann Coulter's horrible comment. How much hidden self-hatred does one have to feel to be able to bully someone in that way?

Expand full comment

From what I can tell, it looks like he’s been suspended for two days, which is not enough

Hi Antoinette, have you considered volunteering for the voter hotline in your state? I'm in NC and did it for the 2020 and 2022 elections and plan to volunteer again this year.

They provide you with training and an easily searchable online manual for the easy questions like "how do I find my polling place?" or "I have recently moved; how do I update my registration?". In NC, we downloaded an app that would redirect calls from the hotline number to your smart phone. It was not active except when you signed in for your shift. (You could also put yourself on pause when you needed a break or if you were logging the results of a previous call into the database).

For thorny issues not covered in traing, you could log the issue for follow-up and tell the caller that someone would be getting back with them shortly. It is rewarding to feel like you are helping someone who wants to vote. And if it is a slow period (i.e, before early voting gets underway), you can write postcards in between phone calls!!😊

I think I originally volunteered through the NC Democratic party, but you can find the national hotline number at iwillvote.com and I think they would be able to direct you on how to become a volunteer for your state (or a swing state in need of help - you don't need to live in a state to volunteer for their hotline).

That sounds fun!

Antoinette, I just want to honor your finding what it is you are willing and able to do. I am getting more comfortable with texting, but I still resist phone banking because, while I love talking with people, I get nervous that my dyslexia will kick in and I won't be able to find what they need. That's just how it is. I'm going to try again, but my main work is the post carding & texting. (The ones from Field Team Six about registering to vote, NOT fund raising!)

In response to your plea, I gave (again) to the Movement Voter Project. I don't suppose that will count toward the match :) Just now I gave to Run for Something & the States Project. Much appreciation to the generous person doing the match.

I sent Greg Borowski, Executive Editor of the Milwaukee Sentinel, a note asking if the paper had covered the Jay Weber story.
