I agree. Your reminder of the positive has definately helped keep me going.

I do have a request. Can you address the future of midterms? My major fear now is - there won't be any or there will be so many roadblocks thrown in front of any voter who doesn't profess this administration's ideology it will amount to same. The complicit GOP doesn't seem to have any concern about how voters respond which increases my concern. I'm going to keep fighting regardless - it's the right thing to do, but what do you think we are up against?

Jesse, I called my (Democratic) representatives as you recommended today. . .

and realized it was high time I thank YOU. There are just so many people, like me, whom you help focus, motivate every day, to oppose what is happening.

Thank you for all you do .

The bill passing is horrible, but Trump signing it when he doesn't even know what's in it is even more disgusting. He obviously is not running the show! Russel Vaught and the Heritage Foundation !!

Thank you for all your hard work Jess! I'm going to take the long weekend to reflect on a few things. I don't know what will happen, but I really do believe that we'll have even more momentum going forward.

I also want us to celebrate a big win that we had with this bill and that's the removal of the provision to sell off our public lands! That was so huge and monumental, I hope that we can all take some solace in that victory.

Wishing you all a peaceful weekend. 💝

I believe that we will have even more momentum going forward. I feel it too. We're tired, but in some ways, what we are doing by building communities nationwide, and perhaps, worldwide, is bigger than one draconian bill. This is a test of our courage, our resolve, and our deeply held values.

We ARE building communities nationwide. We are fighting so hard we may not even realize, we probably do NOT realize what we are building. because we are in it, in the thick of it.

I have never felt so inspired to continue our communal fight for democracy and justice as I have today. This may sound counterintuitive, but there it is. Love you all.. Tomorrow is truly Independence Day.

Rich Kōji Streitfeld's avatar

It’s not counterintuitive Susan. We are sad and dismayed because of our values. And those values, yeah, for me the obscenity of what’s happening reinforce why we have to keep showing up, whether it’s hard or not.

And boy, I value community more than ever.

Happy Interdependence Day!

I'm not even in America, but I too am devastated by this. I commiserate with you. But Jesse is right, you cannot give up, Nelson Mandela didn't, though it cost him dearly, but he triumphed in the end. I hope it doesn't take you that long to re-instate democracy. And last, but not least dictators, fanatics and would be autocrats are flawed individuals and always end up shooting themselves in the foot, sooner rather than later in this case - I hope.

Bon courage.

I read this just before I learned that the House passed the POS's POS bill. The air around me is filled with expletives. If I could afford to fully fund my swear jar, I could easily buy a new president!

This is not the country I grew up in, or the one I want for my kids and grandkids. I won't give up, but this is truly devastating. We need to make sure the Republicans feel the consequences of this horrible piece of "legislation."

“I know it would be easier to forget about politics entirely right now—to throw your hands up…”

Give up now? HELL NO! Jess, you and all the other leaders have been upfront with us from the beginning, that this battle was going to be a longshot, and the greater likelihood was that we would not win. Nevertheless, we have given it our all, and despite what happens today, that effort has not been in vain. Through this fight, we have strengthened and trained our political muscle, experimented with new tactics, built our networks, recruited more people, extracted blood from the other side. We emerge not beaten, but battle-hardened and with new, sharp weapons.

Also, I am not content to accept that all the coming suffering MUST be. In addition to looking and fighting toward 2026, we also need to become starfish throwers and save everyone and everything we can. The citizens of Nazi-occupied Denmark did not accept that their Jewish neighbors must go to the camps, they organized and smuggled over 90% of them to safety. What can we do in this intervening year to protect and defend our people until reinforcements arrive?

Jess, I am in this place of absolutely mad, audacious determination today on this darkest of days because of you, and many others, who have set me the example. Your work and your efforts are of the greatest consequence, and will echo and resound long past this day of defeat, long past the day when these tyrants are dead and buried in their graves and new life springs up in the ashes of their wake. Bless you, and get the rest you so abundantly deserve. I will see you on the streets afterward. 💙✊🏼

Thank you so much for everything, Jesse! One problem I see is the Medicaid cutbacks won’t kick in till after midterms? The severely brainwashed won’t listen to warnings. They’ve been told the whole story BUT believe it’s the Democrats that are lying and trying to destroy democracy. 😡🤬

There will be many closures and lessening of services by health clinics and hospitals well before the midterms so plenty of advocacy and messaging opportunities - but not for the totally dug in cultists types.

Expand full comment
Penelope friedberg's avatar

i hope those clinics, hospitals and nursing homes IMMEDIATELY send out letters to their patients advising them of upcoming closings or any negative changes so that patients (who don't think this budget is problematic) can start facing its consequences. Maybe offer some seminars on how to care for a loved one who requires 24/7 nursing care at home.
