Love the key west ad! & everything else! Wanted to share some local good news I woke up to. Here in NJ we are fighting to get the Climate Superfund Act passed in state assembly. It would make polluters pay to a fund to aid those victims of climate disasters that their pollution caused (cliff notes version). We learned last night that Assemblyman Chris Tully, the Vice Chair of the Assembly committee, where the bill will be heard next, has committed to co-sponsor the Climate Superfund Act!! This is big news, & NJ desperately needs this legislation! Calls, emails & in person actions work locally too. Take nothing for granted! We are many, they are few!! Have a great day everyone & Jess have a great interview with PB! Can’t wait to see.

I’ll have to ck prices here. 💰I have a feeling I can maybe afford a square inch but maybe I’ll be surprised. And most people I know are not reading daily newspapers. I do love the idea!

It’s not a daily newspaper. It comes out every week here. We are a tourist town and it’s a weekly news magazine. It has a good size circulation.

Got it! As an aside, I feel an affinity for Key West, one of my favorite authors lives there and one of my favorite series is set there. 🫶🏻

Yes, let's go for that 'long' pause! Those callers are really 'citizens in action.' As a member of the Silent Generation, I am deeply impressed.

I followed you way back when I first came to Substack. And now, more than a year later, I return to the platform and you're still doing your thing. You're a badass, Jessica! Keep up the good work and keep fighting the good fight!

Now, more than ever, Americans need simple, daily ways to fight back against government corruption. You're reminding people that they have agency and power, even as their country is faltering to fascist policies.

I called all my "representatives" in DC. I had to leave a message for all three of them. It is getting harder and harder to talk to a person. The phones are always busy, hm....... I also sent them messages.

A comment/question. It was my understanding that it has been determined that all the polls that showed Harris leading in the election were skewed because the people who answer their phones and who respond are liberals. The conservatives/pro-Trumpers did not bother to answer. If this is true, aren't all the current polls also skewed by the same factor?

Hi Christine, I have a background in statistics and worked for many years as a data analyst before retiring. You are correct that their are a lot of isssues with polling, although I had not previously heard that particular theory. You have to remember that a poll is simply a snapshot in time and that in 2024 the "undecideds" broke heavily for Trump plus a lot of people simply stayed home. Polls are also only as good as the pollsters' assumptions about who will turn out.

But when you have high quality polls like You.gov and Pew that measure sentiment over time by asking the same questions and you get such dramatric shifts over such a short period of time it is definitely significant.

Maybe it would help to view it graphically. Check out the chart in this Substack. The colored area outside the lines represent the statistical confidence interval which is determined by the sample sizes of the people answereing the poll. (The bigger the sample size, the tighter the confidence interval). Also note the time range of the chart - just from inauguration day to to present:

Well, Cheryl, I sure appreciate your response and explanations. Of course, I was thinking a poll is a poll ... but you pointed out some of the niceties, permutations, and intricacies of polling. Your answer reassured me that Trump's rating is indeed going down! Hooray for that!! Now if we could just get the Republican congresspeople to pay attention ... Thank you so much!

I appreciate all the effort that goes into this newsletter! That said, I'm a resident of DC and don't have a voting representative. We bear so much of the impact of Trump and his puppet masters' terrible actions but have very little power to do anything about it. I have a question and an ask: 1. Are there resources similar to Chop Wood that focus on what citizens without representation can do? 2. If you're a citizen with a voting representative, please tell them that you are in favor of DC Statehood!!
