At Harvard’s Commencement ceremony today, President Alan Garber received a long standing ovation for his refusal to submit to Trump’s demands. I hope others will follow suit.

Musk paid the quid, $300 million to get Trump in. He got the quo, unsupervised access to government records on all things and people that affect his personal and business needs from the American government and from us, the taxpayers. He's leaving because he got his money's worth and more downloaded into his super computers. This is more than a high crime by Trump it is treason, no less.

Some folks are pointing out that stocks fall when Trump announces a Tariff and than rise again when he changes his mind...that there are those that are cashing in on this "strategy." I wonder how much Musk has made of this TACO shenanigan and if he's reading the room and knows that the jig will soon be up. Just a thought.

Big, big thanks, Jessica! My husband and I attended a town hall last Saturday. Our representative didn't show but we did have cardboard cut-outs to address concerns to. Heard from several veterans about the devastating effects of this budget proposal 😢 We're getting our signs ready and inviting friends to the NoKings event on June 14th! Better than stewing, cussing, mulling the demise of democracy ‼️ Persist and Resist.

Jessica, your advice on contacting officials is gold. Consider the foundational role of government – to ensure public health, safety, and welfare. We see that eroded daily. Here in Iowa, another report on nursing home abuses identifies the need for effective regulation and enforcement.

We need your calls for action to vocally push back against the constant onslaught from DC, from attacks on our courts to the very role of government itself. I realize we are all facing a fire hose of daily, hourly attacks. Some of us protest; others write letters or make calls in protest.

Our elected officials and candidates—at state and federal levels have the strongest

megaphones to speak out. One public official does not have the sole responsibility of addressing every drop of water that comes from that fire hose. But, too many D and R incumbents and candidates are quiet. Along with your letters to Repub officials, I submit we need to expand the universe of people who can influence the DC virus affecting our democracy—and push all of our elected officials to speak out. (My last substack talked about this, tool

We are not using our whole nation's resources at our hands in opposing the Trump era. For example when nursing home abuses go unchecked, elected officials, candidates and advocacy groups should be speaking out, using the opportunity to remind people of our responsibility to residents of nursing homes and to having a government with laws. Nursing home abuses are are a stark reminder of why strong regulation and enforcement are critical – and demand a robust defense from those who represent us.

I would like to know what Elon is going to do with all our data. Was his stint in DOGE merely a ruse to get unfettered access? (and now that he's got it all, he can leave the scene?) There are a lot of possibilities for destructive use of our information - since I don't trust Musk, and I see his vision as warped and misguided, I can only wonder what will be next from him

Expand full comment
Jess Craven's avatar

Oh, I’m 100% worried about what he’s doing with our data

I love to embrace every opportunity to celebrate victories, however small. We need to double down on Tesla and other protests.

I don't, however, think that Musk is really gone. He still has all these lucrative government contracts, he joined Trump on that recent trip to Middle East, and his DOGE people are all over government agencies and enjoyed a recent favorable court decision re: access to private data of Americans.

Not to be a wet blanket. But just so we stay on high alert.

Expand full comment
Jess Craven's avatar

Yeah, I know. I don’t actually think that he’s done damaging our government but just the fact that he’s stepping back makes me feel good. DOGE will keep doing as much if not more damage. Vought is a nightmare.

presumably it will end up at SCOTUS

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c93ywvl7yy5o I’m not a lawyer. I’ll try to be more precise. The appeals court stayed (cancelled) the injunction, reversing the lower court’s decision to intact it. Tariffs are back on. I’m just tired of reading articles about how we’ve won sooooo many cases, and yet the fuckery continues.

Expand full comment
Teresa M Schmidt's avatar

Stayed is not reversed or cancelled It is clearly stated in the article the Appeals Court temporarily suspends the lower court ruling. Litigation continues with a hearing on 6/5.

There are other cases filed against the tariffs. I did read somewhere that the administration plans to present the case to SCOTUS tomorrow
