I tried calling Senator Durbin's number and calls are not being accepted. I was told to call back later so I emailed him instead.Same thing with the SCOTUS. I have not written to them. Justice Alito is clearly rogue and I think needs to be impeached. He has thumbed his nose at the American people and has irreparably damaged the legitimacy of the court. This presidential immunity decision will be invalid no matter which way it is decided. Both Alito and Thomas must recuse or resign or be removed.

I was able to leave a voicemail for Durbin at 312-353-4952.

(One of my Senators never has staff answering her phone. Frustrating.)

Dear Jessica,

Thank you for your important work. I have put together a short document detailing how to file a complaint against Justice Alito (using the official form for that purpose). It's really easy to do. I would like to share this with your readers. Please feel free to contact me about this.

Jessica, I’m beyond excited that you’re going to speak at the Woman’s Summit. I’ve joined the NOVA Friday Power Lunch bunch. What an energetic and positive group. I’m delighted California will be represented and sorry I don’t live closer or I’d have signed up myself. Looking forward to hearing all about it😊👍

Why not? MTG as little publicity as possible. Pretty sure it was here that we read the essay about applying the same principle to even mentioning the name of the orange fart. Love, Doc

I received that too. As someone who has visual disabilities, I am dependent on the audio option that almost all Substack for subscriptions include. Does ghost also offer an AI audio option if folks don’t have the bandwidth to record every day as Jessica so generously does? I would be so grateful of someone could find that out. If so, I would be an advocate.

I will definitely not move to a platform without that option, Janie.

Jessica, please consider leaving Substack for Ghost. Here's what I heard from FrameLab regarding reasons you should:

1) Nazis and Hate. Substack has a Nazi problem. The owners of the platform have made it clear that hate speech will have a home at Substack. Substack’s co-founders apparently share the far-right view that hate speech deserves a big, monetized public platform.

Jonathan M. Katz wrote about this issue an Atlantic article headlined “Substack has a Nazi Problem,”

Some Substack newsletters by Nazis and white nationalists have thousands or tens of thousands of subscribers, making the platform a new and valuable tool for creating mailing lists for the far right. And many accept paid subscriptions through Substack, seemingly flouting terms of service that ban attempts to "publish content or fund initiatives that incite violence based on protected classes."

Casey Newton of the popular Platformer tech newsletter shares more details in his explanation of why his publication left Substack. Read the whole thing if you have any questions.

2) Substack has problematic investors: FrameLab focuses on framing and ideology, and it seeks to illuminate the ways in which extreme authoritarian ideologies affect American politics.

Influential Silicon Valley figures are openly embracing authoritarian politics and trying to push American politics to the far-right. At the center of these efforts is Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm that has been one of Substack’s biggest investors. And since Substack charges a 10 percent fee of all subscriptions, it means FrameLab and its readers were paying money to right-wing billionaires with an authoritarian vision for the future.

You can write for our audience without directly giving money and power to these billionaires. It's not too complicated.

3) Substack is power hungry. A small group of corporations or billionaires increasingly owns the world's major media outlets. Substack aims to become a main publisher of news and information in the 21st century, which would give the company tremendous power to tilt the political discourse toward far-right politics.

I'm sure you prefer a future in which a handful of authoritarian billionaires do not control everything. While Substack does host progressive or Democratic-leaning newsletters, there’s no reason to believe that will continue if the company is allowed to consolidate its power – with the help of progressive writers and their audiences!

And if Substack becomes a main platform by which people get their information, the company will have tremendous power over what people actually see. As with Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, this will likely be very bad news for democracy and freedom.

It’s important to build an ecosystem of news and information that is independent of such control and influence, both now and in the future.

4) Ghost is a better deal: While Substack charges a 10 percent fee, Ghost charges a flat fee based on the number of subscribers. This will result in tremendous savings and allow us to spend money to pay guest writers and grow our audience. It still make more economic sense for us to operate on a nonprofit platform with lower costs.

Please move to Ghost!

I read that. Sigh. I have no qualms about moving over--it's the administrative nightmare of it. I am so stretched for time as it is. I just don't know how to make such a huge move. I don't have a team. It's just me.

Be kind to yourself. I’m sorry to learn bad news about Substack. It seems billionaires, venture capitalists, and authoritarians ruin the good stuff for the rest of us. Let’s not let them.
