It will be interesting to watch GOP politicians, bankers and America's oligarch bros scattering out of the sunlight, like cockroaches, as their all powerful leader tanks America's safety nets, one by one.
In every state, approximately 5 million Americans marched in small and large gatherings this weekend. The momentum is shifting against Trump 2.0 and his overblown MAGA megaphone.
The vast majority of Americans do not want the consequences of Trump's campaign of cruelty, retribution and destruction. They're worn out of Trump's relentless and ludicrous Reality TV show "Trump the President"
For those who remember the Vietnam war protest era, it took from 1965 to 1968 to start turning the country against a wildly unpopular war. With the help of Trump's delusional madness, we are getting there faster.
We must double down and get the guy out of office ASAP.
I'm afraid our protest generation are veterans at this. It's our life long struggle to turn our government into a more caring institution for all citizens. I'm think about starting SDS 2.0...Seniors for a Democratic Society.
I wrote a letter to the editor of the Boston Globe this AM about how they represented the crowd which they say they are considering publishing tomorrrow. I think polite letters to the editor of newspapers you subscribe to can be effective whether they are published or not. I wrote "Millions of people showed up around the country for the "Hands Off" protest on Saturday and I have been checking to see how the events were covered in the media. While the Globe's physical paper had an accurate headline in the Metro, as of Monday morning, the on-line version, which is what most people read, was still 'Thousands march across New England to protest Trump administration, Elon Musk.' If you weren't actually there this would come off as nothing special rather than a protest that was 10 times larger than previous protests per the police estimates of thirty thousand you reported further down in the story.
The Globe is not alone in this weak framing, but it is a missed opportunity. The growth of protests deserves more prominence because of what they represent at this point in history and what we are likely to see in the coming months. And it is also a chance for the Globe to show these tens of thousands of potential new readers--most of whom probably looked to social media to see their experience reflected-- the value of accuracy and balance that professional journalism offers."
Regarding the numbers from Saturday: There were over 1300 protests. The smallest protests in "red states" were 200-300 and many, many other small town protests were 700-800(based on actual counts). So let's assume that these smaller protests averaged 500 people. Let's also assume that these smaller protests were the majority, perhaps 1000 X 500 = 500,000. Let's assume that the next level (Augusta, Maine - Providence, R.I., Billings, MT) averaged 2000 (this is a VERY conservative estimate then 250 X 2000 = 500,000. Next some of the larger rallys such as Boulder, CO, Portland, OR etc. averaged 10,000 (again conservative) 40 X 10,000 =400,000. Then the top 10 Boston, NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia etc 100,000+ X 10 = 1,000,000. There is almost no way that there were not 2.5 - 3.0 million people in the streets, and probably many more.
Yep—made the calls. Pretty direct about having worked as a nurse for 42 years, saved for retirement and now worried about losing Social Security. Seeing my retirement funds disappear in this insanity.
I'm using your action items as my daily checklist. Thanks for providing such clear direction as I am often too sick to my stomach to think straight due to all the BS going on by the trump regime.
Wish we could ALL abandon the use of GOP in our vernacular for the Republicans DO NOT DESERVE the acronym of GOP = "Grand Old Party." I never refer to the party by anything other than Republican -
Thanks Jessica! I’m so glad I found you around Christmas; little did I know you were a present that keeps on giving. Your clips are so useful and the reminders and scrips to contact my reps are empowering. Everything outlined clearly and easy to follow. My reps in Florida never answer, dont follow suggestions but do say they heard from me.
The so-called SAVE act is coming up to be voted on this week. Has anyone talked about activism specific to the passing of this atrocious bill? What about a “Day of Absence” of women from all work? Or would that just somehow play into their desires? My grandmother had more rights than my daughter does right now!
I heard that the Reichwing led senate had to get Vance's vote to pass their putrid budget today. The bare bones minimum in votes is how Reichwing plan to screw the millions of the most vulnerable citizens. In other words, their plans aren't even popular with all in their own tribe, but that doesn't stop them.
Considering that only about 31% of eligible voters voted for F47 to begin with, you can see how very sociopathic & focused Reichwing politicians are in making sure millions of poor, disabled, young moms, babies and kids will suffer, starve and probably lose their homes.
We are in denial right now, in our country. All this cruelty is being done no matter what damage it does to ppl, because their cult leader wants it done. And every Rethuglicon is complicit.
The GOPs attack on America's poorest and most vulnerable will be their undoing. They can only hide in their faux bubble and Fox News "let them eat cake" mantra. America's caring majority is coming for them and we're actually willing to pay for it through taxes.
I'm just finding this group today and am deliriously happy to have done so! Thank you, Jess, for all the fantastic information, which I'm already working on. It feels so good to have found a group of sane people.
Have you given thought to organizing events that would get more media attention? Busing protestors to his golf club in Bedminster or his home in Mar-a-Lago? This would get huge media attention and embarrass him personally.
This was not, in all honesty, my idea. You can read more about it in a Substack from a guy named Terrence Goggin, The History Professor from West Point. I'm not sure if this link will work, but you can Google him. https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?tab=wm#inbox/FMfcgzQZTzdXShXsVfNgGTVznPqVvChW. Such an effort will simply take money and lots of coordination. I will lead the charge, but I am disabled.
Yes, but it would make a statement. I'm an old alum of the counter culture. When we marched on Washington protesting Vietnam, the President listened and eventually resigned. And, yes, some people got tossed in the slammer, But it was worth it. We need to make bigger statements than last weekend. No one really cared.
The turnout both in the USA and around the world was great. However, I agree with Jessica, this is tough. I sent this letter to two newspapers today. We have to rise up against the kidnappings.
=====================
With all of the horrible things the current administration has done in less than three months, our outrage is diluted: imposing tariffs that tank the economy and financial markets, decimating federal agencies and the exceptional federal workforce, threatening U.S. allies, and proposing budgets that will wipe out the social safety net. Even with all of that, the worst is kidnapping hundreds of people and imprisoning them in El Salvador or the U.S. How is this different than Hitler’s concentration camps, or Iran holding 53 Americans hostage for 444 days?
I’m asking Americans to rise in outrage against this violation of fundamental constitutional rights and demand that the kidnapped be returned immediately. In addition to speaking out, I’m asking everyone to limit their spending and buy only the essentials or purchases from local businesses until the kidnapped are returned. If those held have committed crimes, then charge them, let them present a defense, and let the courts decide.
Pam Bondi, you swore an oath to the constitution, and immediately broke it by expelling people without due process and by violating court orders. To Todd Lyons, (Acting Director of ICE) – if what you are doing is legal, why are your agents not wearing uniforms and abducting people at night? It’s because you and your agents are committing crimes.
Finally, I’m asking newspapers across the country to print the names of all of those kidnapped and incarcerated and tell their stories. If we look away, if we get distracted, who will be next?

Please feel free to use this or write something similar. It would be good to get this into all media as soon as possible.
Trump plan for runaway inflation to destroy us and wipe out his debt. Hope your financial planner had an idea for protection of our cash. Weimar republic was destroyed by inflation in Germany and the Mango Mussolini has the playbook and his footprints are all over Germany in 1938. Be FIRM. He smells a wimp like Hitler smelled Chamberlain. Tell Obama and Harris the reassurance is NOT the tonic for these times.
ACTION encourage governors of coastal states to declare their states as FREE TRADE ZONES. Contact the mayors of our port cities to declare their city as FREE TRADE ZONE. Trumps tariffs become meaningless. Take the power from the dictator by ignoring him. He can order us but it is useless if we do not obey. Let''s don't invade Canada or Greenland or Panama or Mexico; we will have to shout loudly to help the military not obey; the Constitution makes Trump the Commander in Chief of a powerful military, but we can cut off the money as you try to implore Congress to do so.
I just need to ventilate to like-minded folks. It is incredibly challenging to make any headway in Ohio, with its gerrymandering, and legislators who are only focused on this administration and their party. When cabinet positions were being voted on, Senator Moreno had his aide tell callers he was planning on voting for every nominee brought forth by the president. Congressman Carey has an email site that only allows 180 characters and his form letters are insulting as his replies are not accurate. Today, he wrote (or his aide) that DOGE has found many instances of fraud. That’s not what my research shows. I will continue to call almost everyday yet pray we can get more people on board to have more of an impact. Just needed to get that out of my system to fight another day.

Yes, I was there then for the protest and I’m here again now and I’m damn tired of having to protest all the time but we will do it won’t we!
I'm afraid our protest generation are veterans at this. It's our life long struggle to turn our government into a more caring institution for all citizens. I'm think about starting SDS 2.0...Seniors for a Democratic Society.
I'm not tired of the protests. I'm tired of Reichwing that force us into this. My anger is straight at all Reichwing fascists.
100%!
True. Time isn't on our side.

I was actually surprised the protests weren't being covered more vigorously in the print and online media platforms. Very weak framing indeed.
I agree, I couldn’t find coverage anywhere on YouTube, except a few shorts. It’s a nightmare because rural America has no idea this is happening
There were more than 2 million protestors, for sure. I await Rebecca Solnit's final count.
Our local news (Scranton PA) said “dozens” attended Saturday, and there were easily 300+ people. I mean, Nancy Pelosi was there!
It's insane.

You are much kinder than me. Any tribe that spits in my face while trying to make me suffer doesn't deserve any kindness at all.

Well, that's something! And welcome to the team!

That is outstanding, but he'd probably have them ALL arrested if they showed up at Maro-lardo.
