I noticed in the NYT article on your sister's republican representative Mike Lawler, they stated, without any proof, that he "faced a torrent of criticism from LIBERAL constituents" while his REPUBLICAN constituents were "mostly silent". It's this kind of media BS Bias, we have to recognize & call out, so it doesn't subconsciously influence readers & even ourselves.

Pretty sure at least some of his republican constituents were plenty mad, too.

Jessica, I really appreciated the way you brought in the Amelia Earhart quote today — it captured the emotional weight so many of us are carrying, but also pointed to motion as its own form of hope. I’m working on weekly posts offering tiny strategic moves for staying human through this chaos. This week’s is about creating “waypoints” to help navigate when the old maps don’t work. Thanks again for all you’re doing to help keep people moving and grounded

The FDA is delaying Novavax approval and putting roadblocks on the updated COVID boosters— please ask your representatives to push back on this. The US would no longer have access to COVID vaccines for anyone.

We the People at Work

The People, the protectors of Democracy, are out and about. What "people," out where, about what--and why? First, millions said "Hand Off"to Trump/Musk et al, then on the 19th via 50501" (50 protests, 5o states, 1 Movement + Indivivable) millions more protested the mess in WDC. Also on the 19th we celebrated the "the shot heard around the world at Lexington and Concord, starting the Revolution and our country. On the 22nd protectors of the environment cleaned up a different kind of mess on Earth Day.

As important as the participants in environmental mess cleanup and American history are, this post is dedicated to the named and unnamed protestors fighting the Trump/Musk Washington, DC, tyrannical mess. Or as Susan Grymes calls it: "Protectors" of democracy, and so shall I in this post.

Who are the Protectors of democracy on April 5, 19th, May 1st--or all the everydays in between and into the future?? We will never know the names of each individual marcher, sign holder (or just standing together in solidarity). But we do know by name some people, advocacy groups, judges and law firms, and other entities who have not been cowed, and have fought back publicly--sometimes under threat of death.. Some, such as Sen. Cory Booker, with his 25 hour righteous speech on ethics, morality, and American democracy, have become an inspiration. Here then, in no particular order of noteworthy (except the first three), are the names of many of the army of protectors of democracy--and remember Courage is Contagious:

(Of course, the list is imperfect, Additions are welcomed. Also re-posting is permitted and encouraged.

Regarding Gerry Connelly/House Oversight Committee. Jasmine Crockett is the Vice Ranking Member of that committee. SHE should be appointed the Chair as next in line. I get that AOC is incredibly popular, but I'm not on board with overlooking Rep. Crockett in this way. Unless I'm missing something about protocol or procedure, this action just doesn't sit right me.

I submitted my original comment in a bit of a hurry, so I hope it didn't come off as judgemental. I just saw things a bit differently here. Jessica does an incredible job giving introverted people like me the confidence to be actively engaged. I used to donate and sign online petitions and leave it at that. If you had told me a year ago that I would be calling my reps and publicly commenting about politics on social media on an almost daily basis, I would not have believed it. But then I found CWCW and here I am.

I wanted to provide a script for the Chop Wood, Save the Planet segment, regarding The Fix Our Forests Act, H.R.471, which passed in the House in January 2025. This text was mainly pulled from 5calls and should be sent to both Senators:

Hi, my name is ____ and I'm a constituent calling from _____. I'm asking the Senator to reject The Fix Our Forests Act, H.R.471. This is presented as legislation to address wildfire, but it actually focuses on opening federal lands to logging interests. It also bypasses critical environmental laws, including the Endangered Species Act, that protect our ecosystems and restricts scientific input and public engagement. The bill could have devastating consequences for the environment and endangered species. I'm asking the Senator to reject this misguided legislation. Thanks.

Time to start asking these Republicans who claim they will vote against certain things, which of the terrible cabinet members they voted to put in? It starts with every vote they made , not just the ones they want to claim they might make in the future.

Just a thought. ICE agents take an oath to uphold the Constitution. Agents are expected to "perform our duties honorably and with dignity in a manner befitting the oath of office we are sworn to uphold". What if they do not? Cannot a court issue a ruling to all agents to clearly identify themselves as agents when making a stop, to read to person their rights, to not wear masks or hoodies, and that they, the agents, have a responsibility to ensure that detainees are handled in accordance with the law regardless of the instructions received from their superiors. That is, the agent is personally responsible to their oath and to any court rulings else they are subject to arrest. Sure, this will be explained away as a matter for HR, but contempt of court is punishable by arrest. Then, can a court send Federal Marshals to arrest individual agents?

What tools do courts have to hold individuals responsible for their actions? Where does banality of evil stop? When must a person who takes an oath refuse directions from their superior that goes against that oath?

If any reader has legal training I would appreciate comments.

I respect and admire your commitment and the work that you do, but disagree with the changing call topics. We should focus on the budget butchery, tariff taxes, and kidnapping by masked government thugs. Everything else, as disgusting as it is, is relatively less important and can wait until the Congress is so overwhelmed with pushback on the basics that they finally stand up to Trump and dump him.

A great comment from Paul Krugman today.

I am very much not in the camp that urges Democrats to focus on kitchen-table issues and ignore the Trump regime’s other outrages. Polls tell us that Americans aren’t as ignorant and self-centered as some political consultants would have their clients believe. Many ordinary people are outraged at the news of renditions of legal residents to gulags in El Salvador. The public overwhelmingly opposes Trumpist defunding of medical research and attacks on universities, as well as the DOGEing of Social Security.

Democrats shouldn’t give Trump a pass on any of his destructive actions. They should, instead, tell voters that stripping people of their civil rights, annihilating education and science, destroying U.S. trade and poisoning our international relationships has one unifying goal: to destroy civil society in the name of MAGA.

That said, I believe that the administration’s metastasizing economic catasrophe is a critical development.

As I read the history of successful autogolpes, politicians who win an election and then effectively destroy the democracy that elevated them, it is almost always the case that their consolidation of power rests upon the perception of economic achievement.

Take the case of Hitler. And spare me the fake outrage: We’re well past the point where you can say that MAGA/Nazi comparisons are illegitimate.

I listened to Heather Cox Richardson's Politics Chat from April 29 and one point stood out. She strongly recommended that AOC should NOT become a ranking member of the Oversight Committee, or any other, at this point because she'd then be shut behind closed doors where we wouldn't see or hear much from her, and right now, her vital energy is desperately needed in rallying Americans to stand up. Because that makes so much sense, I'm going to call Leader Jeffries again today and change my request. Hopefully, he's thinking very strategically about all of this!

California here. Senator Padilla’s office just told me “we are in the minority and don’t have power to impeach”. I called Senator Schiff office to tattle and share my disgust. They said that’s not their line and they are fighting. Ok great, but why are they still not unified against this regime?? I’m so throughly disgusted with the Democratic party as a whole. I think it’s time for start new with fighters, dreamers and electeds who don’t get insider trading tips and corporate bribes. They are too busy fighting people like AOC and David Hogg to fight this authoritarian takeover of America. WE knew about project 2025, how did they not prepare to fight for America? How can we seriously keep supporting this party? We’ve got to stop setting for the less evil of the two… we need a party truly for the American people, not the American dollar.
