Y'all, the number of the HOUSE bill is wrong--thanks to the reader who pointed it out. It's HR 7825, NOT 7285. Should've checked before I posted.

Again, correct number is HR 7825.

My daughter graduated from Emory University last May and I am just so shocked that the president of Emory called in the Georgia State police. The video of the cop wrestling a professor to the ground after all she did was yell "What are you doing?" which is understandable considering they had a student facedown on the grass in zip ties is something I will never forget. I think it was a terrible decision and I hope he resigns.

I was at an event at Yale last weekend and had the opportunity to visit the occupation several times each day. The theme was books not bombs and people brought books and they were spread around the plaza, there was music, speakers, art work, food. It was beautiful and peaceful every time I visited

The college and university student protesters are brave Americans.

They are right to protest our federal government’s support for and involvement in Israel’s Gaza War.

What can Americans do? Support the student protesters. They want a ceasefire. So do Americans, including me.

The student protesters want America to stop supplying weapons and amino for Israel. So do Americans, including me.

Israel’s extreme right-wing government has killed more than 33,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. That’s unforgivable.

If the current Israeli right-wing government can’t defend itself against domestic terrorists after all these years of building their military with our tax dollars, then there’s nothing more we can do, or should do.

Also, be forewarned. Netanyahu has a political agenda. He wants Trump re-elected. The longer Netanyahu is able to string out and prolong his war against Palestinian women and children, the more likely President Biden will not win re-election.

So glad to learn about Sister District. Here in NC, Lisa Grafstein is the absolute best choice for targeted fundraising. She is the only openly LGBTQ+ member of the state senate, and is an eloquent and dedicated fighter for civil rights and tax fairness. She was so effective in her first term they drew her out of her safe district. So w/in 30 days after the lines were redrawn she SOLD HER HOME to move to a tougher (but winnable) district nearby. She successfully beat three legal challenges to the move, with Republicans claiming she didn't really live in the new district b/c she's renting (!) and then, that she couldn't continue to serve in her current district this term b/c she moved out of it. It's going to take $2-3 million to win this race.

I read about Callsr4Change and I am embarrassed to admit that although I actually like phonebanking, I have significant anxiety about auto dialers! I get flummoxed and anxious when a person is on the line before I have a chance to feel ready to talk to the next person…I much prefer just doing the dialing myself, so that I can feel more in control. Luckily, the Voter Protection Phonebanks run by Wisdems don’t use auto dialers, so I do a lot of that. I’d be happy to do more phonebanking, in addition to the door knocking I also like, if I could figure out a way to feel more comfortable with auto dialers…I’m wondering if there’s a way to control the speed of how they work in some way…I need a one on one tutorial, clearly!

Robert Reich has two recent posts that provide excellent approaches to addressing college students’ concerns about the Israel/Gaza crisis.

He has another recent post about the history of Free Speech Movement at UC Berkeley in the 1960’s and how that catalyzed reactionary forces and put Reagan in power. We must learn from that history.

Interesting insights into the economic incentives driving the shambolic response by Columbia to the recent student protests.

Columbia is not an outlier amongst elite institutions.

I will just point out, though it is not being as widely reported as the instances of antisemitism, that people have also been harassing and insulting Muslim students.
