I guess we should not be surprised that in some states States rights supersede women's health rights and, in fact, women's rights in general. The audacity of white males to say so outright is still shocking. I fervently hope women will not accept having their rights preempted this way and will prove it at the ballot box.
thanks for the link to Bad Faith, Jess! I didn't know about i - and as a former nun and recovering Catholic, countering "Christian" Nationalism is something I care deeply about. Break a leg tonight! 💕
I’m still out of town but have been keeping up to date with events. I am haunted by a quote I read by Carl Sagan’s daughter that seems particularly apt just now “…I have come to believe it is not sex or the quest for knowledge, but abject cruelty that is man’s original sin.”
The willingness of the patriarchal state's priority is the baby over the life of the mother. This was the case in the story The Handmaid's Tale in the Country of Gilead (the religious right eventually takes over the US) They prioritized the baby's life because they needed to increase the birth rate of the country in order for it to maintain it's human and economic infrastructure. The religious right propagandizes their people from childhood and there will be no negotiating with them. They will yield only to power.
Thank you for the info about DemCast. And it's great to see the number of bills addressing the corruption of the Supreme Court. Called my reps about them.
Doing these actions helps keep me sane and optimistic.
One of the *very* few things I got from my parents was the importance of access to reproductive health care and how lack of access stifles women’s lives and continues the cycle of abuse (unwanted children, women and their children trapped in DV situations; the list is endless). Not having this access imprisons women in myriad ways. I remember writing a paper about why abortion must be legal when I was in my early teens. And was a Planned Parenthood volunteer in my 20s. It’s always been about control; we all know this. So thanks for the information about the National Network of Abortion Funds. I set up a small monthly donation.
Am I correct that Porter gave up her seat for her run for Senate, leaving her seat up for grabs in a purple/red district? Isn’t that the problem she created and now is asking grassroots orgs to provide a solution by keeping it blue? Or am I missing something?
I just finished Maddow’s book Prequel. Not sure if I can stomach this movie but will try. BTW, her book, available in audio narrated by her, is brilliant. And terrifying. It’s all terrifying
Yes, he is wonderful. I plan to get that book. Prequel explains how and when we have been here before. Rampant antisemitism, hatred. So sad that this IS who we are, right?! Also Fever in the Heartland by Egan is equally chilling. KKK especially but basically the same bad guys
Thanks, Jess, for listening to oral arguments today and for the Resistbot action. THE EMTALA case in Florida is local and there has been no local/state coverage . I initially learned about it from Demlabs posting. So grateful for all you info warrior/super-activists !
Y'all the NRDC link was broken this is the correct one! https://action.nrdc.org/petition/3004-af-rfkj-041624

You and me both!

It’s true.

I haven’t watched this movie, but I have read Tim Alberta’s TheKingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicalism in an Age of Extremism. Scary, but so worth the read. Here’s a review from The Guardian. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/dec/02/kingdom-power-glory-review-tim-alberta-trump-evangelical
