I fully appreciate and agree with your ideology. First and foremost, I am a pragmatist. If Joe Biden and Mary Peralta lose their positions, the North Slope, the State of Alaska, the United States of America and the Planet Earth will be worse off. A whole lot worse off.
Right now we have our hands full here in Wisconsin. The State Supreme Court election is critical. We need all the help we can get. I spent the morning making yard signs. Chop wood, carry water and win this race.
Indigenous people can be wrong and in this case, they are. We can't allow Willow to go forward. I'll note that Dan Pfeiffer agrees that Biden Admin is wrong on this one.
Just a quick update for you and all readers. In the past two days, I have not been able to reach the White House through the 202-456-1111 number that was provided. I then tried to reach the White House several times today using the "contact us" link: https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/
That has resulted in the message "There was an error processing your submission" every time I pressed "send." Has this happened to anyone else? Is the White House having a problem? Any suggestions? Thank you!
Believe me, as I hear about it it'll be in the newsletter. I know at least one enviro group has already sued, so hopefully that'll hold it up for awhile.
Agree with you 100% on your stand on climate. I am devastated by Biden’s decision on Willow. In addition to breaking his promise and unleashing a carbon bomb in the world, he’s made it much harder to get young people involved in politics. And he’s going to need every vote he can get
Yep. I just had this conversation with someone in his comms office. It's such a slap in the face to the young people who got him elected. He doesn't understand how devastated they are.
well said. I appreciate you listening to feedback and providing context. Curious about your thoughts on the election in Wisconsin for the Supreme Court judge. Is it as pivotal as I've heard--nationwide, not just statewide.
I cannot overstate the importance of this election for all of us. It's critical for abortion rights in the WI--right now an 1847 "trigger law" that doesn't even allow abortions in the case of rape or incest is winding its way through the courts. If Dan Kelly wins it'll be upheld. No more abortion in Wisconsin. Women will die. The race is also critical for gerrymandered maps--if we win the majority Dems will immediately challenge the (highly partisan) gerrymandered maps in WI--considered some of the most extreme in the country. These are maps the current court allowed. With new maps we can flip the state legislature AND pick up two Congressional seats, which could go a long way towards our flipping the House of Reps in 2024. The election is also critical for voting rights. We have, as recently as December, seen GOP election administrators in Milwaukee gloating publicly about how well they suppressed the Black vote in the midterms. A court with a liberal majority will reverse many of the worst voter suppression measures. And, perhaps most importantly, Wisconsin could very well determine the outcome of the 2024 Presidential election. It is the ultimate tipping point state. If we win this election and a liberal majority takes hold in the state supreme court Trump, DeSantis, or whomever is running on the GOP side loses their shot at carrying out a successful fake electors scheme. So this election could literally determine whether or not we enter another, possibly even worse constitutional crisis in 2024. Finally, while it seems like our candidate is poised to win--she got over 50K more votes in the primary than the two conservative candidates combined--this same scenario played out in 2019, with the left candidate starting out way ahead. But then the GOP poured LOADS of dark money into the race after the primaries. Our judicial candidate lost by 5K votes. And this time around the Uileihn family has committed 20M to Dan Kelly's race. They are running the most despicable ads you can imagine, saying Protasiewicz will "trans-ify" (yes, as in transgender) the judiciary and all kinds of other vile things. (She is not trans and has nothing to do with trans people. They just use that word as a catchall for everything they fear). A bit more: Kelly is a forced-birther, anti-LGBTQ marriage, has equated Affirmative Action and Social Security with slavery, and was paid $120,000 to advise the Republican Party, including on its efforts to send a fraudulent slate of Trump electors to the Electoral College. He's disgusting, unqualified, and very, very extreme. So on every front, yes, we need to win this race. Hope this helps.
Wisconsin is a swing state...a vital bulwark in presidential elections in general, but particularly in 2024 to fend off rapidly spreading fascism throughout the country. Anything that makes the state redder will impact 2024.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court seat will impact state voting laws, gerrymandering, efforts to further limit the governor's authorities, as well as reproductive rights, and other civil rights under attack by the GOP.
That's OK. Your question inspired me to make another Tiktok about the election--I've been putting it off because it's so much work but now it's done and it's all thanks to you!
Beautiful job on today's post. From a climate activist since the 70s.
Thanks, Carrie. 🥰

Just got off a phone bank for it, and also just made another Tiktok about it. I think of little else.
The community that is the most directly affected by the Willow Project has a mayor that has worked diligently to prevent the project from moving forward for health reasons. https://thehill.com/opinion/energy-environment/3749037-dont-make-indigenous-people-pay-willows-price/amp/
The corporations (💰💰💰💰) are pushing development. The indigenous community like all communities is diverse.
Exactly.

Money can blind folks to a lot, unfortunately. No group is exempt from that temptation.

Did you try sending my Resistbot letter? The one in the Extra Credit section?
Is there a path to still stopping Willow before they break ground? Who is doing this work and what can we do to amplify it?
Believe me, as I hear about it it'll be in the newsletter. I know at least one enviro group has already sued, so hopefully that'll hold it up for awhile.
Yes, lawsuits and maybe if it's slowed down enough, electric vehicles will make it obsolete
Thank you for your clear explanation to fellow Dems on the subject of COMPROMISE.
Rarely does a group reach 100% consensus
We must remain realistic and support each other knowing compromise is essential
Exactly, Sheila!

thank you-I think I'm re-planning my weekend :) :)
Good! (:

and election day is 4/4? I donated for Protasiewicz--any other suggestions for non-Wisconsians?

ok, thanks all. Jessica--I'm sure you've already talked about this, so sorry if I've missed it. Sometimes the world is a firehose of information!
