Just called Senator Schumer's offices and left a message. Menendez should be discharged from the Senate, even though we need every vote. He was caught trying to leave the country from Greece (I think) with GOLD BARS SEWN INTO HIS JACKET! He was caught in the act of accepting bribery! But now he's been given new committee assignments? We democrats have to walk the straight and narrow path with honesty and integrity and not give the repubs anything to criticize!

Jesse, I don't know how you crank out these lengthy missives when you're on your way out the door! It is YOU who are absolutely AMAZING!

I just realized I'm confused about The States Project and Every State Blue (I was on the Blue Tennessee zoom last night). So I'm going to look it up!

Take good care, my hero! Heroine? Shero? Darn, I love that we're getting more enlightened but I sure sometimes get annoyed by not knowing the "right" word or who is deciding that!!! So I'm not perfect....LOL!!

Two different orgs, both working to fund state legislative races. States Project tends to fund states with more immediately tangible results, but both efforts very, very important.

Thanks, Jess! The more the merrier!!

As Jess says below, two different organizations, both doing important and excellent work. I live in MN, one of the states targeted for help by the States Project. As an example, Minnesota elected a blue trifecta government in 2022 by flipping a critical Senate seat. Just one and we are all blue! But, we are again the target of lots of dark money all over the state in 2024, so additional resources will be needed again this year to retain the House and Senate.

In addition to my giving to the States Project (through another giving circle called Tending to Democracy - mostly readers of Heather Cox Richardson), I also will make a gift to the brand new Blue Tennessee group just launched last night - I have friends in the state and know they need help identifying, recruiting, and training good down ballot candidates. Happy to offer what $$ I can (the Tennessee three were awesome to watch last year. Happy to help find more like them!)

Hard to keep track but worth whatever effort we can make!

And I want to pile my thanks on, for “Dem-scrolling.” Love it! Thank you. (Promise to call on the discharge petition - so important!)

It was through Heather Cox-Richardson that I found you, Jess, and you led me to Robert Hubbell, Simon Rosenberg & Joyce Vance, whom I now follow. I would love to learn about the Black and other POC leaders whom you follow. I listen to Eugene Robinson and Michele Norris at the Washington Post, and would listen to Charles Blow if the NYT had a listening option. I haven't found folks on substack and am guessing you have. I appreciate your opinion so much, as you've never led me astray :)

I was also noticing that that was a very white list. Troublingly I don’t know any terrific Substack authors who are Black, although I would LOVE to, and I know they are out there. Please post suggestions, all!

Thanks, Jess. Just called my rep., Congressperson Dingell, to support House Res. 1016. The nice person who answered the phone gladly took down my "vote." When I asked him whether Rep. Dingell has signed on in support, he said he couldn't tell me that. Her legislative support decisions are not available until she goes public, apparently. What? I was surprised, to say the least. Maybe I am naive in thinking she works for us, maybe? Plus, this isn't super-secret, right? Arrgghhh!!

You're so right. Dem-scrolling is exactly what we need to do!

As a NJ resident and a person working to get NJ to be a more "small d" democratic and less corrupt state, I agree with everything in the call to Sen. Schumer about Sen. Menendez except calling for him to resign now. NJ is in the middle of a primary battle for his Senate seat & one of the candidates is the Governor's wife (yes while he's still in office for one more year). If Menendez resigns now, the Governor's wife could be appointed by the Governor to that seat, giving her a big advantage over Rep. Andy Kim. This is already an unfair race with the Governor putting his thumb on the scale politically to get her an advantage in our antiquated primary system. We are the only state that does not have block balloting and gives candidates a "county line" putting non-chosen candidates in ballot Siberia. So please don't ask for him to step down. Just to take all his committees away. Thanks.

Great info. And yes, I'm well aware of the primary. I've already phonebanked for Andy Kim! But that's a great point about the resignation. I'll amend that going forward. Although the Governor's appointing his own wife seems...like it could backfire?

Expand full comment

It probably would backfire but I wouldn't put it past the governor to do it.

Good to know this kind of info Fern. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks. Hope it was clear. Believe me every Democrat in NJ wants Menendez gone.

Yeah those three are the worst of the worst. Huge problem. I'll consider.

I quit doomscrolling, a long time ago. Big waste of time! Demscrolling works nicely: "Today's Edition Newsletter", "Letters from an American", "Steady" , "Chop Wood, Carry Water" and "The Big Picture" fit in my reading schedule.

On checking, I found that House Resolution 1016, Providing for consideration of the bill (H.R. 5673), concerns, H.R.5673 - Responsible Legislating Act, and as best as I can tell, has nothing to do with aid to Ukraine.

Does McGovern's discharge petition bill have a HR number?

Expand full comment

I know what happened. This is McGovern's discharge petition. I think they have to create these long in advance, so the name of the bill is sort of a "shell." I do think this is the right bill number but I'll double check.

Expand full comment

Ugh, really? I got that number from Christine Pelosi, believe it or not, so didn't check it as carefully as I should've. I'll see if I can find the right number, or just do the script wothout the number in the future.
