They are evacuating my 93 year-old dad and 91-year-old mom along with all of the residents of their retirement community in Bradbury near Duarte, CA right now. Thank God, my sister lives nearby and my mom can go stay with her. Not sure where they are going to take my dad since he needs skilled nursing. I live out of state and it’s difficult to hear and see what is happening to so many people in such a widespread area of the Southern California, Los Angeles basin. Prayers and thanks to all the volunteers and emergency responders and prayers and hope for everyone’s safety.

My heart is with you. We used to live in Bradbury and I know exactly the community you're referring to. May your loved ones be safe and well, and may you have peace!

So horrible. Just received a video from a very close friend of her house burning up. After this horror ends, please comment on here how we can help those who need it!

For those in SoCal or people worried about SoCal, the App "Watch Duty" gives accurate, timely fire watch updates: areas under mandatory evacuation, areas "to get ready for evacuation", sometimes access to stationary in place cameras in live time, angle of wind, etc. Living in a different fire area than Pacific Palisades, I find it extremely useful.

Yes I just downloaded it.

In my area of SoCal, I can look at the direction of the wind, the start of a fire, and calculate my odds on whether or not to evacuate. It gives me a modicum of peace of mind.

Sadly, my Aunt and Uncle's home in Pacific Palisades is still under threat, even though one house on their street burned. We don't know if there is still fuel there for embers to relight.

I hope you all stay safe. We're okay so far but becoming more surrounded.

Care to say what area you are in? We are in a suburban development in the Inland Empire that butts up to wilderness - no trees, just desert scrub - but it can still catch fire.

I am in Simi Valley in Ventura County. I hope you stay safe! It's amazing that the desert can burn.

Well, SEMI-desert!

My Aunt and Uncle's home burned. They lived there since the late '60's.

Thank you for Watch Duty. I have been looking for something like that. My friends and family live in evacuation zones. We are in Laguna Niguel in So Orange County.

You're wise to stay away for a while. At this moment, the line between "Evacuate right now" and "Evacuation warning" goes along the street I grew up on--San Vicente Blvd. in Santa Monica. The home my grandparents lived in from the 1940s until their deaths in the late 1950s is within a block of the line (between San Vicente and Sunset Blvd.). I had friends in the Palisades.

Though my husband and I moved to central Maine over half a century ago, and could not possibly afford property in Southern California, a literal firestorm demolishing neighborhoods I once knew well, and perilously close to others, is very sobering.

People in privileged areas may tend to expect they're safe from global climate change; but though I take no pleasure in this, Nature is certainly proving them wrong.

Exactly right.

We also moved to central Maine from LA basin in the ‘70’s. It is very sobering and sad to witness. All are in my thoughts and prayers.

My dad had his office on San Vicente in Brentwood. He's long gone but the idea of that is terrible. My old high school, Uni, has apparently closed for the day as well. Yikes!

Thank you Jess- if you need a place to stay - we have room though we are on the east coast. I am watching the fires with that helpless feeling- only prayers for all those affected - which seems so inadequate.
