I saved the link you kindly provided and the poem in my poetry file soon after I read your post. Thank you, again. As for the experience of reading it, it's as you say, the body knows ...
Ha! You did it. I'll buy a T-shirt, too. A great Letter, as usual, but a great essay as well. Heather and Joyce. Two of the rightly most loved women around. (you're getting up there Jess.)
I spent the day making Christmas cookies from a very early edition of The Joy of Cooking which I inherited from my mother years ago. Out of curiosity, I read the Dedication and Foreword. Sandwiched between them was this quote:
“That which thy fathers have bequeathed to thee, earn it anew if thou wouldst possess it.”
Goethe: Faust
Even in the most domestic of endeavors, there’s no escaping our call to action to preserve, renew and advance the fundamental tenets and principles of our precious Democracy.
Thank you for the Thomas Carlyle quote. The reminder and path to help in NY 3rd special election. And the letter on Ukraine.
Ukraine turned over the 3rd largest nuclear arsenal in the world to Russia for destruction in exchange for the guarantee of its borders and that those borders would never be subject even to the threat of force, much less anschluss in Crimea, much less actual invasion. That guarantee was made by Russia, the UK, and the USA. (maybe France? seems there was another party; details are in "Every War Is An UnCivil War", chapter on Putin's War. There was some quibbling over "guarantee" v "assurances" typical liars language) Aid we send to Ukraine is a minimalist response compared to what we promised, what Russia violated, and what Ukraine voluntarily gave up.
Jessica, I love how you broke down the magic and the power of that “simple” quote! I know that I really “felt” all that and therefore posted it on LFAA, but you really nailed it in your Substack today. 👍
I'm on a family vacation (with two generations of cousins!) on Long Island, so I gave myself permission not to read any newsletters this week. But I'm so glad I decided to read this one and now I'll go look for Heather's. Very well indeed, and thank you dear Jessica!
I'm sorry about the link. I found the article about the Joe Biden Bipartisan Infrastructure project by looking for infrastructure projects in the south hills of Missoula. Maybe that will help? I hope so. Happy Friday.
Fellow choppers and carriers, we need help in Texas. I urge readers across the nation to contact Texas newspapers to headline this most recent, unbelievable attach on Texas women--denying physician-recommended medical treatment to a 31 year old woman going through a pregnancy that is threatening her health. I think Texas needs to hear what this is doing to its reputation in the eyes of other Americans. It truly is the case that women of child-bearing age should not live here.
To be honest, I no longer believe writing or calling Abbott et. al, moves the needle at all. Even when 80% of Texans urge reasonable gun control, or abortion exceptions for rape or incest, those calls have had zero effect. Zero.
I hope that fellow Americans will highlight what a barbaric state Texas has become, and I hope our media and our businesses bring even more attention to this. That was my thought.
As a Texan, I have decided to focus my attention on voter registration, winnable elections, and supporting competitive out of state races.
We are in a bad, bad way here. We are losing our best and brightest young adults, and rightfully so. It’s not a healthy place.
"...later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered
where does it hurt?
it answered
everywhere
everywhere
everywhere."
__Warsan Shire
Wow. Wowowowow.
The whole poem.

Thank you for the verse, and the full poem, Martha. And just as Jess said.
The first time I heard it, my body felt it on a cellular level. WOW indeed.

I may just have to make the shirt!

So glad you 'stopped by," Terry! Have a lovely vacation!
Should there be a link to the Perfect Union's tool for commenting?
Ugh sorry! I'll try to go back and find it. Mistake!
Thanks for featuring my call for us to leverage our energy in all our orgs!
Of course! Thanks for sending it!
Loved the pep-talk, Jess. Just what I needed today.
I'm so glad, Ellen.
Thanks Jessica for showing us how to answer the question, “Now, how can I help?”

I'd love to turn this into an action but not sure what good it does to write the papers? Maybe we write to Abbott instead?

Donated to bluevoterguide.org.
Tried the Resistbot via Whatsapp for Ukraine aid and it said I had no reps? Strange.
Went instead to the voter voice website from the html and sent letters to my 3 reps.
Weird! I've never tried it before using WA...did you enter your info? And thanks for the bluevoterguide donation!
Have used WA a number of times to sign petitions bc they said it costs less at their end than when users text directly.
