Hi, all.
Sorry I haven’t gotten “Extra Extra” out to you yet—it’s next on my list.
I hope you’re holding up OK after another shattering tragedy in our country.
In light of what happened last night in Monterey Park—a city not 20 minutes from my house—I wanted to send out a quick heads up that Newton Alliance will devote tomorrow’s “Lunch and Lobby” Zoom event to calling the 11 Democratic Senators who still haven’t signed on to co-sponsor Dianne Feinstein’s Assault Weapons Ban Act. Senator Feinstein plans to re-introduce this bill any day now, so this would have been timely even without our thirty-third mass shooting of the year happening 21 days in.
Considering that we are seeing an unspeakable amount of slaughter already in 2023, it’s criminal that every Democrat isn’t already on board. Let’s tell them so.
Attendees to tomorrow’s 12PM ET action hour will hear a bit about the Alliance’s work to get such a ban passed, and then make calls together.
It feels really therapeutic to DO something after an event so tragic. So please, attend if you can. I’m sending this out tonight as my newsletter will come out well after the action hour has happened.
Monday, January 23rd, 12-1PM ET. Sign up here.
Hope some of you can make it, and bring a friend!
Jess
P.S. If you can’t make it there is another Lunch and Lobby next week. You can sign up at the same link. And I will put some version of this call to action in tomorrow’s newsletter.
As an Asian-American, and this on the beginning of the Lunar New Year, it is just shattering. I saw the headline last night and still cannot bring myself to read the details. But when nothing changed after Sandy Hook, it is not surprising that these mass killings continue to be a part of American life, regardless of who the perpetrators are or what types of firearms were used.
Dear Janice, I read your post and wanted to say something in response but didn't have the words. And I still don't. Still, didn't want to turn away in silence. 💔
