Hi, all, and happy Friday! Good news! Last night, Joe Manchin’s Dirty Deal failed on the Senate floor, 47-47 (60 votes needed for passage). Nice job, y’all! This is not to say, of course, that it’s dead forever—Manchin tried to attach it to the NDAA, and that’s what failed. He will likely try to get it into the omnibus bill that’s still being negotiated, but it’s becoming increasingly likely that he won’t find the votes. Still, if your Senator is any of the below, please make sure to call them and thank them for blocking it.
Jessica, thank you for continuing to lift up the work of Simon Rosenberg and Tom Bonier in your newsletter. Thanks especially for the well-curated list of articles today. You help your readers so much by pointing to crucial info like this.
Thanks to Heather Cox Richardson's column today, she noted that Tuesday the House Ways and Means Committee with decide whether to publish Trump's tax returns into the House public record. My Washington state Representative is on the committee, and I have already emailed her in support of publication and plan to call her Washington office Monday morning to voice my support. Others who are represented by members of the committee might also like to share their thoughts. I have shared that information on my Facebook page but also hope you will also consider it for your column. Here are the members of the House W&M Committee with their link to their offices. I hope you will expand this story and encourage others to share their thoughts as well, as they wish.
I hope you're fully recovered from Covid and can take it just a bit easy over the holidays.
If anyone hasn't watched the Nancy Pelosi documentary, "Speaker in the House," it's a winner, for sure. And proves again what a remarkable and amazing woman she is! We should all be grateful for her skillful leadership, grace, and grit.
