Just wanted to say, Jess, how much fun I'm having chopping wood and carrying water! I started out timid when it came to contacting my reps. Now, I treat them like my team, while we together pursue democracy. One senator keeps replying to my messages even though I check the "you don't have to reply" box. And realizing that the assisting personnel are the ones actually reading my messages, I always include them as the major part of our team.

Rustin is a model for individual conviction, organizational genius, and examples of advancing the cause, at the loss of personal credit (infrequent in the political world). The recent movie is solid. I would ask readers to go to other non-academic/philosophical analyses of the Rustin model of activism, as opposed to relying solely on the cited article). Stick with his credo: "...n five simple steps: “1) nonviolent tactics; 2) constitutional means; 3) democratic procedures; 4) respect for human personality; 5) a belief that all people are one.”
Thank you so much for directing us to the Bayard Ruskin article. Truly a man after my own heart. I am so fed up with and bored by extremism. I lived through a lot of that in the 60’s and it wasn’t great then and it’s not great now.
As Miles Taylor noted in his recent book, Trump and right-wing extremists are equally hostile to veterans' health programs. They will fill the VA with partisans who will tear them down.
I just got back from seeing the film "Rustin" with fellow angelic troublemaker Lisa Goldenberg Corn of the Downtown Nasty Women, and it was the perfect companion to this afternoon's webinar hosted by Robert Hubbell. It all about organizing and persisting. I feel like every activist and organizer should see this movie, first for the history and performances, but also because it is a great guide to organizing. Learning that they pulled off the March on Washington in almost no time and the details that Rustin thought of from transportation to food was amazing.
Yeah I love the little detail about making peanut butter sandwiches instead of cheese so they wouldn't spoil in the sun. That was in the New Yorker article--not sure if it's in the movie.
Rustin's straightforward philosophy works today. He may not have written any award winning book, nor taught at one of our finest schools. He was on the ground. Bayard would have rolled up his sleeves and helped chop wood and carry water, as he explained both his lofty visions and quite pragmatic tactics. A side note: Rustin reached out to work with those with more extreme views; I do not believe he ignored or disrepected views of Malcolm, for example

Absolutely. I actually read a bio of his a few years ago that was terrific. I'll see if I can find the name.
