The person who answered the phone at Chuck Shumer’s office listened to my schpiel and asked if I had been given a script by an organizing group so the they could ‘understand staffing needs(?)’. That has never happened before.

That is wonderful news about Derek Tran's victory!! (one of the races I wrote postcards for). Thank you so much, Jess, for these democracy- and sanity- saving actions. Signed up for the EVP webinar and made the calls (including to all 4 of Schumer's numbers) and sent emails. It's appalling that the PRESS Act hasn't been brought up for a vote.

Jess, I love picturing you headed north on I five to Portland. I am also on I five headed south toward Southeast Portland, where we are spending the night on route to my son‘s farm in Southern Oregon. Have a peaceful holiday. 💙

I'd love any insights on how we can "chop wood or carry water" on the whole MANDATES issue. The orangutan says it was decisive, but as per his usual pathological tendencies, it's a lie. I've already drafted a letter, but any GO-TO resources that can help us contribute to making our voices heard so Congress remembers they still work for us would be most excellent!!

Jess Craven's avatar

Well, we already know he didn’t have a mandate, and I think the press has started to talk about what a close election this was also. Not sure what we can say to our lawmakers about it—although I guess it would be good to remind GOP lawmakers that it was no landslide. I’ll put it in an upcoming script.

Thank YOUUUUUUUUUUUU. I know the precious blue dots in red states fear or are indifferent on reaching out to their GOP officials with a “What’s the point?” I’ll keep encouraging those to do it. It matters.

If nobody calls, they can honestly say there is no opposition.

We can’t let that happen. I’ve already submitted my letter to my Congresswoman.

The Nov. 18 Letters from an American from Heather Cox Richardson “More Americans voted for someone other than Trump than voted for him.” Is a quote I use frequently when the mandate question comes up.

Called Senator Baldwin on HR9495. I rarely call her office because I know she’ll vote the right way. Can’t bring myself to call Ron Johnson’s office—he always votes wrong and if you are asked for your zip code (required to message him) it’s an automatic rejection. Zip code blue blue Madison—rejected.

They have actually said that to you?

Sara, I look up zip codes in other states and use those in my calls to their "lawmakers".

I was recently in Berkeley and went to the SFMOMA! The Amy Sherald exhibit opened after I left, but had specifically wanted to see Fortuna and the Immortality Garden and it was awesome. Thanks for all you do and enjoy your drive up north!!

Terrific indeed! I must get there before it closes in March 2025. I needed more time than I had to see everything I wanted to see.

As a follow-up to my comment yesterday about Chuck Schumer and HR 9495, do you believe there's not enough time for him to gather a committee and change the bill so that section 4 is removed?

Whatever your answer is, I wish you a happy and peaceful Thanksgiving!

Expand full comment
Jess Craven's avatar

I thought I answered yesterday—I don’t think that option seems to be on the table right now. He’s said he won’t take it up at all this session unless it gets crammed into a must-pass bill. So having it considered in committees is probably not possible.

Absolutely love your action items. Hope your voice gets far wider circulation. This is vital.

Allowed me to reach my representative via @ Resistbot . Also commented on Senator Schumer’s page.

I had become complacent in the past 4 years under Pres Biden. Competent leadership allowed me to focus on my own work to get two major publications this year. But now there is no scope for all that . We are in for a scorching 4 years ahead that will be simple mayhem! Stay strong and keep going. 💪🏽✊🏽
