"That's the beauty of democracy, that together we can be more than our individual selves."

-- Activist Ady Barkan, featured in "Not Going Quietly," a documentary about his activism while living with ALS. Such a fine man, such a huge loss for all of us.

My cousin had ALS and passed a number of years ago. He also was an activist for Healthcare for all. Much sadness for this loss.

My very dear Mother-in-Law in law (my brohter's wife's mother) died from it. It's a terrible disease.

What a heartfelt tribute to a remarkably selfless man.

To honor Ady's memory, I recommend the excellent newsletter (HoosLeft) detailing the surreal state of Indiana politics and those fighting the good fight.

The latest newsletter features a podcast interview with a brilliant activist: Chelsea McDonnel (a force of nature and an inspiration for all of us fighting corruption and authoritarianism).

Hi Jessica, As usual today's articles were outstanding. I am always so glad to let my senators and MoC know they have room to improve. One note for today, the Resistbot was missing the SIGN "CODE" However the link was great - it sent all three emails. I love it!!!

Hi, amazing Jess.

I may have mentioned this before, but the not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plans are not deceitful. I've been with Kaiser Permanente's for many years and except for some minor grievances, mostly administrative and sometimes having to wait a long time recently for specialty appointments, I have been extremely satisfied with my care through them.

Thanks for the touching tribute to Ady Barkan.

Interesting. Barkan was dead set against it. He called it "Medicare (Dis)advantage."

Physicians for A National Health Plan was a “friend” of Ady Barkan. Good resource to share for info on Medicare Reach/ Direct Contracting and Medicare Advantage.

The for-profit plans are deceitful, not the non-profit ones. I’m quite satisfied with Kaiser Permanente. I have a good PCP and specialists. I have never been denied a necessary test, and I have all the medicines I need to stick around for a while, hopefully a long while. When I go for a blood test, generally I get the result on the website within a day, sometimes two.

Erica, you are painting not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plans, like Kaiser Permanente, with the same broad brush as the for-profit ones. The anti-Medicare Advantage advocates are not differentiating between the two types, and that is unfortunate.
