I sent this email to the LA Times today:

I am ashamed that the LA Times is not endorsing Kamala Harris because apparently Dr. Soon-Shiong is an ally of Donald Trump and Elon Musk. They are low-life bullies who want to dismantle our democracy. As a Californian and visitor to Los Angeles, I feel horrified by the Times’ decision in 2024.

LA Times cancelled. Thanks for the info. So glad to support you as a paid subscriber. You are amazing.

LA Times went downhill fast when it was sold to Dr. Soon-Shiong. It used to be my go to, but it quickly took to supporting and downplaying the dumpster's behavior. I cancelled my subscription years ago. The current state of the LA Times is an embarrassment to what it used to be. Until recently, I still followed it on FB for quick headlines. But if you look in the comments section (I don't suggest it) the comments are filled with maga hate. So I blocked it, there, as well.

Update on LA Times: its editor has resigned in protest. "I am resigning because I want to make it clear that I am not okay with us being silent," Mariel Garza said in an interview with the Columbia Journalism Review. "In dangerous times, honest people need to stand up. This is how I'm standing up." In addition to being the paper's editorials editor, Garza was also a member of its editorial board. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/los-angeles-times-editorial-page-editor-resigns-following-paper-s-decision-not-to-endorse-presidential-candidate/ar-AA1sO8kj?ocid=msedgntp&pc=U531&cvid=2b45ec91f55540ab9b8f9213d9e6066f&ei=13

I applaud him for this. I was in the newspaper business in Las Vegas for almost 15 years, until 2012 when I was downsized, albeit on the advertising side. Editors had scruples. As D. Earl Stephens, an award-winning journalist here in substack often says, if these people can’t be bothered to tell the truth, they need to find another line of work. Mariel Garza got the message. Bless him.

Thank you, Jessica. I canceled my subscription and wrote as blistering an email as I could without swearing.

My hands might fall off from all the postcarding I've been behind on first, but if they don't I'm now signed up to ballot cure phone bank in PA two days and I signed up for 8 shifts doing general registration/ballot issue calling using the link from the other day 😅💕

I'm hoping this can be a good ease in to get more comfortable phone banking in general for future elections!

You can print postcard stamps at a kiosk located in the lobby of many post office locations. DIY at its best—and they won’t run out! Look a little more “industrial” but will do the trick

Just wanted to add to the energy I've been reading about here. Yesterday I phonebanked with the Mecklenburg Dems to recruit volunteers to canvass and poll greet. In 45 minutes, I was able to fill 4 canvassing shifts for this weekend and that was WITHOUT using an automatic dialer (they were trying out a new technology that allows you to schedule people in Mobilize directly in the phonebank platform). Tonight I did a Superwomen Wednesday phonebank with Supermajority calling younger women voters in GA. I've done these many times and the max. number of people on the call is usually around 25. Tonight there were more than double! I spoke to several women who are planning to vote early and I shared how to look up their early vote location and they were appreciative of the call!

Just donated to the Giving Circle and the Nevada Natives organization. Thank you for keeping us going Jessica!

I just got a report out of the Mecklenburg phone bank and despite everyone spending 30+ minutes on training (many more than that) and most of us not using an automatic dialer, we recruited 110 new canvassers and over 100 new volunteers!! They keep having their largest nights with over 100 people joining the phonebanks.

Unofficial “voter guide” for Florida Supreme Court.Vote NO on retaining Justices Francis and Sasso.

“Justices Renatha Francis and Meredith Sasso were appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and face merit retention races. Both are members of the Federalist Society, a self-proclaimed “group of conservatives and libertarians dedicated to reforming the current legal order.”

Both justices opposed efforts to allow proposed amendments to enshrine abortion rights in the state Constitution and to allow adult recreational use of marijuana for adults. Both justices also supported Florida’s six-week abortion ban.”

So this is weird — who else lives in L.A.? My husband and I are filling out our mail-in ballots right now and we’re realizing the LAUSD school board member candidates are not on our ballots! Has anyone else noticed this??

Expand full comment

No! You should call the BOE right away!

I called the BOE — when LAUSD district lines were redrawn, it changed our district, we are now no longer in District 5 but are now in District 2 (our house but not our school, really annoying). I’m glad it wasn’t an error, but I’m disappointed we can’t vote for who we want, because I have very strong opinions about who needs to take Jackie’s place, and public education is so important to us. Really hoping everyone who can vote for LAUSD District 5 gets out the vote!
