Hey, all.
We have received credible reports that some members of the Cochise County Board of Supervisors in Arizona may vote no on certifying election results today. They will be meeting at 4:30pm MST to canvass and certify the results, and have opened up the meeting to public comment. Failure to certify the results is a violation of Arizona law. It could result in delay and/or litigation, and undercuts the integrity of our election system.
If you’re in Arizona—but even if you aren’t—please email board@cochise.az.gov (before 4:30 AZ time ) to ask the Board of Supervisors to respect the will of the voters and fulfill their non-discretionary duty to canvass and certify the results. I have also created a click-to-send tool that will quickly auto-populate an email you can personalize and send. It’s here.
I said:
To the Cochise County Board of Supervisors,
I'm writing as a concerned citizen who wants to protect American democracy and the electoral systems that underpin it.
I understand that some members of your board may vote no on certifying election results today. This is unacceptable. Failure to certify the results is a violation of Arizona law. It will result in delay and/or litigation, which will cost taxpayers exorbitant amounts of money without changing outcomes. Finally, it undercuts the integrity of our election systems. There is zero--and I mean zero--evidence of irregularities in this election.
I join thousands of other Americans in asking you to respect the will of the voters and fulfill your non-discretionary duty to canvass and certify the results.
The entire country is watching; we expect you to do your jobs.
Thanks.
Spread the word to folks in AZ especially, please!
Jess
Here is the email that I sent:
Dear Board of Supervisors –
It has come to my attention that you are considering not certifying the Cochise County election.
I will readily tell you that I am a resident of neither Cochise County nor of Arizona, so you may decide to ignore me entirely. But that would be missing the point entirely.
The point is that we live in a democracy, and that democracy extends to the nation far beyond Cochise and Arizona. If you allow this travesty to occur the impact will be felt across the country, and the political and economic ramifications will be felt by everyone in your jurisdiction. It would be unwise to put your county on the map for all the wrong reasons.
This is not a threat; the threat is from the anti-democratic individuals in your jurisdiction. You will have them and yourselves to blame if you allow them to hijack your democratically fair election.
Please consider your constituents and choose fairly and wisely.
