Chop Wood, Carry Water 8/24
Hi, all, and happy Tuesday!
Hoping to see some of you at my phone bank today! 🥰
If you’re interested in helping with the recall but don’t want to make calls—and you have a little cash to spare—please consider making a donation to the Grassroots Dems HQ here in L.A. They covered the cost of the 5000 postcards that got delivered to me (and which have virtually ALL been claimed by volunteers!) and are out several hundreds of dollars. Please, if you have $5 or $10, send it their way! If they recoup their costs they may even be willing to give me another 5000! Imagine how many cards we could get done!
(Grassroots Dems are also organizing all the phone banks to stop the recall, including the one I’m running later today!)
OK, all. Lots to do. This is a big day or two in Congress, and our phone calls about the reconciliation package are REALLY important right now. Especially if your MOC is one of the 9 blocking progress. (Here’s a 45-second explainer video about this.)
OK all. Sending love. Have to go repair my tire now. 🚙
Call Your Senators (find yours here)
Hi, I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is ______.
I’m calling for two reasons today: first, I want the Senator to support S. 984, the Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act of 2021. Plastic pollution is a huge problem; we need stronger legislation to make sure that plastic manufacturers do their fair part to reduce unnecessary production and waste of plastic consumables. [H/T]
Second, the Senate MUST pass voting rights legislation. It’s urgent. I strongly support HR1 and HR4 and want to see them both passed as soon as possible. [If Dem add:] I strongly support abolishing the filibuster to get this done. Thanks.
Call Your House Rep (find yours here)
📌 [If your rep is one of the 9 blocking the infrastructure bill there’s a script just for you beneath this one]
Hi, I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is _______.
I’m concerned that some Democrats are threatening to block Joe Biden’s recovery agenda.
Threatening to undermine urgent proposals like lowering drug prices, strengthening Medicare, universal child care, and climate action by pitting them against roads and bridges is completely unacceptable.
I want the Congressmember to support passing an inclusive reconciliation bill before voting on the bipartisan infrastructure package? We need the full recovery agenda, and I’ll be watching to ensure they are fighting for it. Thanks.
🚨Use this script if you are talking to the office of Rep. Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05), Rep. Vincente Gonzalez (TX-15), Rep. Filemon Vela (TX-34), Rep. Henry Cuellar (TX-28), Rep. Jared Golden (ME-02), Rep. Ed Case (HI-01), Rep. Kurt Schrader (OR-05), Rep. Jim Costa (CA-16), or Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux (GA-07).🚨
I was appalled to see [Representative] listed as a signatory on a letter threatening to withhold support for Biden’s recovery agenda.
Threatening to undermine urgent proposals like lowering drug prices, strengthening Medicare, universal child care, and climate action by pitting them against roads and bridges is completely unacceptable.
Will [Representative] stop obstructing Biden’s Recovery agenda and commit to passing an inclusive budget reconciliation bill before the bipartisan infrastructure package? I’m disappointed with their current position and will be watching to see if they change course. [H/T]

VERY EXCITING NEWS! The White House Comment line is finally open! It’s being staffed by volunteers, so there’s a bit of waiting on hold, but Stacey Abrams wants us all to call every day this week — 888-453-3211— and say:
“I voted for President Biden, and am grateful for all he’s doing, but I’m calling to ask him to do much more to pressure Democrats in Congress to pass voting rights legislation—namely HR1 the For the People Act and HR4 the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. And I want him to vocally support abolishing or reforming the filibuster to get this done. If we don’t protect our ability to vote now we will never get this chance again. Thanks.

It’s Kathy Hochul’s first day as NY Governor and Food and Water Watch is asking us to please call her and ask her to be a climate leader by stopping the Astoria and Danskammer fracked gas plants. 877-235-6537 then press 1 to leave a voicemail. This was very easy.

[To all 3 reps] [H/T]
I am very, very worried that Americans are losing their ability to vote freely and easily.
The late Congressman John Lewis knew that every vote must count in order to assure every voice is represented. For democracy to work for all of us, it must include us all. But unfortunately, the freedom to vote still isn't guaranteed. HR 4 would restore and strengthen our freedom to vote by making sure that any changes to voting rules that could discriminate against voters based on our race or background are federally reviewed, so we all have an equal say in our future and our rights are protected.
I strongly urge you to support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (HR 4) and do whatever it takes to pass it. Thanks.
OK, you did it again! You helped save democracy! You’re amazing.
Talk tomorrow.
