Hi, all, and happy Monday!

I’m still in the Maritimes, but felt it was important to send out a newsletter the day before the big election in Ohio. There are lots of ways to help get out the vote listed below—please avail yourself of them. It feels so good to be part of a winning campaign, after all, and I feel cautiously optimistic that we are going to defeat Issue 1 on Tuesday.

It’s not enough, however, to narrowly prevail in such an electoral contest—one in which democracy itself is on the ballot. We must absolutely shatter the opposition. Humiliate them. Grind them under our figurative heels. So please, don’t rely on others to get out the vote in this special election. Join us in making the victory not just certain, but unqualified, devastating, and definitive.

Ohio deserves no less.

I’m calling to say that I am opposed to House Republicans’ “culture war” provisions in both the upcoming appropriations bills and the NDAA. The Senator should know that I am watching these upcoming votes carefully. We have a chance to advocate for much-needed strengthening of a long-overdue update of silica exposure protections in mining. Why does this matter? Because after a long period of dormancy, black lung cases are surging again.

Please skim (or better yet, read!) this short article explaining the problem. Then go here to make an official comment (click on the green “Submit a Formal Comment” button). Ask the Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration to strengthen their proposed rule to specifically require periodic silica dust testing during all phases of a mine’s construction and operation, and require mining companies to ventilate their mines or capture or eliminate dust. It’s fine to keep your comment short and simple—I won’t tell you what to say as they respond better to unique comments. Thanks!

Donald J. Trump has now been indicted for trying to prevent American voters from determining the outcome of the presidential election in 2020. It’s a deeply momentous, important, and historically weighty moment.

When the former President’s trial takes place the American people deserve to watch it. So I am writing to echo Joyce Vance’s calls for cameras in the courtroom.

As Vance says: “Chief Justice Roberts can ensure these proceedings are made publicly available. He can order that there be cameras in the courts. And he should…we are all victims of this crime. We have the right to watch the proceedings.”

I couldn’t agree more. The American people demand cameras in the court for the trial of Donald J. Trump. Thanks.
