Hi, all, and happy Tuesday.
Wow. Big news day. Cuomo is out; the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill passed in the Senate; Marjorie Taylor Greene is banned on twitter for a week…and everyone is still trying to process the IPCC report. We are certainly living in what the old saying calls “interesting times.”
One could take a bit more boredom, really.
But that’s not our fate. Our fate is to live now, and we must do what we can to help. Of course what that looks like today—and most days—is just using our voices and our feet. “Suit up and show up,” as they say.
It’s amazing what this can accomplish.
Call Your Senators (find yours here)
Hi, I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is ______.
First, it is imperative that Congress pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act before state legislatures and commissions begin to redraw districts. We need urgent federal action to secure fair districts, protect voters from partisan gerrymandering, and ensure their voices are heard. [H/T]
Second, I’m glad the bipartisan infrastructure deal passed in the Senate, but I’m livid that Republican Senators cut 10 billion in funding for public transit while keeping 25 billion in fossil fuel subsidies. Are they/you not listening to the news? This is pure insanity. We are in a climate crisis, and this bill is wholly inadequate to the scale of it. We need strong, aggressive action on climate or our planet will be unlivable. Period. Please ask the Senator to double down on climate action in the upcoming budget package. Thanks.

Hi, I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is _______.
I’m glad the bipartisan infrastructure deal passed in the Senate, but I’m livid that Republican Senators cut 10 billion in funding for public transit while fighting to keep 25 billion in fossil fuel subsidies. Are they not listening to the news? This is pure insanity. We are in a climate crisis, and this bill is wholly inadequate to the scale of it. We need strong, aggressive action on climate or our planet will be unlivable. I want the Congressmember to make sure it’s included in the House version, and/or the reconciliation package.
[If Democrat add] We are out of time. It’s on Democrats to get this done. Thanks.
Extra Credit
Let’s call Jamie Pinkham from the Army Corps of Engineers at 202-761-0292 (you’ll be leaving a voicemail). Say:
I know Mr. Pinkham has the ability to call for a full federal environmental impact statement to assess threats to treaty rights, water protection, and climate posed by Line 3, and I am asking him to do so.
Line 3 break treaties with Indigenous people, threatens the drinking water of 18 million people and will accelerate our climate emergency. Did you hear the latest IPCC report? This is insanity. This pipeline will spew emissions equivalent to over 50 coal-powered plants. It must be stopped. Thanks.

[to your Senators] [H/T]
I support President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda and urge you to vote YES on the budget resolution. Please reject any amendments that cut critically important investments.
I am particularly concerned about amendments that would cut investments in health care affordability; the expanded Child Tax Credit; a pathway to citizenship to Dreamers, essential workers, farmworkers, and other eligible immigrants; education including affordable child care, free pre-K and community college; clean energy initiatives; affordable housing; nutrition for children and families; expanded home- and community-based care for the aging and people with disabilities; and paid family and medical leave.
We can afford the $3.5 trillion budget resolution when the rich and corporations finally start paying their fair share. This means taxing wealth like work, raising the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28%, and investing in IRS enforcement to crack down on wealthy and corporate tax dodgers. It also means saving money by allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices.
You have the opportunity to invest in our families and communities -- paid for by ensuring the rich and corporations finally pay their fair share. Please do not let this opportunity pass us by. Thank you.
OK, you did it again! You helped save democracy! You’re amazing.
Talk tomorrow.
