Chop Wood, Carry Water 5/19
Hi, all, and happy Thursday.
Of course the news is terrible. Awful. Anxiety-inducing.
But YOU? You are amazing.
Your power, your determination, your perseverance, your love of country…will prevail. The only thing that can defeat you—and us!—is quitting before the miracle.
Don’t do that.
Feel the fear, thank it for sharing, and then take action despite it.
In so doing, we will discover that feelings aren’t facts.
Only actions are.
And our actions will carry the day.

Hi, I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is ______.
I know that the House recently passed the PRO Act, a bill bolstering unions and helping more workers to organize. It’s coming to the Senate as S. 420—will the Senator support it? Every worker deserves the power and the benefits of a union.
Also, I know the House just now passed H.R.7688 - the Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act. I want the Senator to support it when it comes to the Senate floor. [If GOP add:] I know no Republicans supported it in the House, and I’m appalled. High gas prices are devastating American families. We need to tackle this problem from every possible angle. Vote yes, please. Thanks.

Hi, I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is _______.
First, has the Congressmember yet co-sponsored the Judiciary Act, H.R.2584? [If yes, thank. If no add:] Tat’s really disappointing. The Supreme Court’s leaked decision on abortion is the final straw. They’re a court stacked with politically motivated, religious extremists. It has to be fixed.
Also, are they yet a co-sponsor on HR 7018, the Green Postal Service Fleet Act? [If yes thank. If no add:] I want them to sign on right away. There is no excuse for the USPS’s spending money on deeply inefficient, polluting vehicles that will be on the roads for 30 years. Thanks.
Extra Credit ✅
Chubb is one of the biggest oil and gas insurers in the world, and unlike ten of its global peers, it has zero policies limiting insurance coverage of new oil and gas projects. In recent years, Chubb has insured oil drilling in sensitive ecosystems off the coast of Brazil, seismic testing to identify oil and gas reserves on the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge, and oil pipelines, including the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Trans Mountain tar sands network.
Let’s call and/or email them and demand they do better.

Either way say (roughly):
I am calling/writing to ask that Chubb listen to shareholders and pass a policy that would ensure you are not insuring any new fossil fuel expansion projects or projects that are violating Indigeous rights. As the leader of a major insurance corporation, you have a responsibility to push your company to take action for a just and rapid energy transition. Thanks.

Regardless of how you feel about any particular president, it’s clear that our democracy needs new legislation to prevent future abuses of presidential power and corruption, and to make the presidency more transparent.
The Protecting Our Democracy Act (PODA), S 2921, a package of pro-democracy reforms passed by the House of Representatives last year, would:
Ban presidents from personally taking money from foreign governments;
Strengthen protections against foreign interference in U.S. elections;
Ban presidents from pardoning themselves, or from using pardons for bribes;
Make it harder to seek retribution against federal whistleblowers;
Enable a timely and orderly presidential transition of power.
PODA would ensure that all presidents put the American people’s interests above their own, and help ensure they focus on issues like combating inflation and protecting our national security—and not using their office for personal gain.
I want the Senator to co-sponsor it. Thanks.
OK, you did it again! You helped save democracy! You’re amazing.
Talk tomorrow.
