Hi, all, and happy Monday!

Wow is this late! Sorry! I had family in town all weekend, so didn’t check emails at all, and that set me back quite a bit this morning. Over four hundred to get through! On top of that I’m still recovering from my border trip, which apparently took a bigger toll than I realized—I’ve been muttering “I’m exhausted” even more frequently than usual according to my husband and child 😂.

The good news is I did a Tiktok about that trip that’s gotten almost a half million views. I’m not typically one to care (or brag) about view counts, but since Sister Lika did ask us to spread the word about what’s happening there, I feel happy people are seeing the video. Anyway, I’m going to keep this short to ensure that you actually get this email sometime today. You’ll also receive “Extra! Extra!” soon, too, I promise. After all, good news is even better when you have to wait for it, right?

I understand that Senators Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham just re-introduced legislation to give Dreamers a path to legal residency. The Dream Act, as the bill is known, would allow people who were brought to the US as children and have a high school education and college enrollment, employment or military service to earn residency and, eventually, citizenship. I’d like the Senator to support it strongly.

I’d also like the Senator to push President Biden to redesignate Temporary Protected Status for Nicaragua, which would shield thousands of Nicaraguans in the U.S. from deportation. Thanks.

I support the Resolution introduced last week to expel George Santos from the U.S. House of Representatives. Every Member of Congress needs to vote in favor. There is no doubt that George Santos is unfit to serve in Congress. He’s a grifter, and now he’s grifting off the US taxpayer. He’s also a danger to our national security. He needs to go. Will the Congressmember support this Resolution?

I know your administration has announced its intent to resurrect a Trump era policy that would ban asylum to anyone traveling through a third country. This is a violation of U.S. law which guarantees the right of any individual to apply for asylum, and favors those with resources (who can come directly by air) over the most vulnerable. This policy will lead to more family separations, and puts Black, Brown and LGBTQ people at more risk. It’s a repudiation of your campaign promises to restore a fair and just asylum system. It also makes your administration culpable in abuses that we thought only Republicans were capable of.

We must be better than Trump and his followers. Please do not pursue this policy! Thanks.

In a new thread and post, NDN reviewed the remarkable February jobs report. It’s a reminder of how much better the economy is today under Joe Biden, despite COVID, global inflation, Russia’s aggression, supply chain challenges, domestic insurrection and extremism here in the US.  Some data to share:

• Under Biden US is seeing its lowest unemployment rate in 53 years, lowest poverty/uninsured rates ever

• GDP growth is 3.4% - 3x what it was under Trump

• US economic recovery from COVID better than any other G7 nation

• Almost 2 jobs for every unemployed person, new business starts/wages at elevated levels

• Deficit and trade deficit lower, energy prices and inflation also continuing to drop

• Deficit went up every year of Trump's Presidency, has come down every year of Biden's

• Of 48m jobs created since 1989, 46m- 96% - have been created under Dem Presidents

• Domestic crude oil production will set record this year (mythbuster!!!!)

I am concerned about the numerous measures that have been introduced in Congress that will unjustly undermine critical local decisions made by the people of the District of Columbia and their elected leadership. These local laws were enacted to address important local concerns, most notably criminal justice reform, reproductive freedom, democracy, and equal treatment under the law. Efforts by members of Congress to pass disapproval resolutions usurp the prerogative of the District of Columbia’s elected mayor and council and the citizens they represent.

I know these measures have already passed in the House, but they must not pass the Senate. I urge you to not prevent local D.C. laws. Thanks!
